Geeta Manek Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Maharashtra State Hindi Sahitya Academy

Mumbai, 21 March 2025: Renowned author, playwright, and journalist Geeta Manek was conferred the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Maharashtra State Hindi Sahitya Academy for her exceptional contribution to Hindi literature as a non-Hindi writer. The award recognizes her remarkable work, particularly her docu-novel Sardar: The Game Changer (Hindi), which vividly narrates the unification of India under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The Hindi edition of the book was released by Honorable Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, further cementing its significance in the literary and historical landscape.
Geeta Manek’s Sardar: The Game Changer is a masterful blend of history and storytelling, offering readers an engaging account of how Sardar Patel unified 565 princely states to form modern India. The book’s impact transcended literature, inspiring a 62-episode television serial telecast on Doordarshan. Manek not only authored the book but also co-wrote the screenplay and dialogues for the serial, showcasing her versatility as a writer. The serial, produced by K.C. Bokadia, brought Sardar Patel’s legacy to life for millions of viewers.
Geeta Manek has made significant contributions to literature, theatre, and journalism. Her plays, including Dr. Anandibai Like Comment Share, have been performed in Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, and English at prestigious venues such as Prithvi Theatre, NCPA Experimental, and international drama festivals. Notably, she is the only Indian writer to have personally adapted her play into four languages.
Manek’s literary journey began in journalism, where she worked with prominent publications like Abhiyaan, Femina Gujarati, Gujarat Samachar, and Sandesh. She currently serves as the Magazine editor of Mumbai Samaachaar, one of Asia’s oldest newspapers. Her diverse body of work includes novels, historical docu-novels, plays, travelogues, and children’s books. Some of her notable works include Smiley and Clipi (a set of children’s books), Mrugjal, Tamara Vina, and Chaardhaam Yatra.
Geeta Manek’s achievements extend beyond writing. She is a sought-after speaker at international book fairs and literary festivals. Her ability to weave history, culture, and human emotions into compelling narratives has earned her a distinguished place in Indian literature.
