Digitization will result in desirable attributes in the healthcare system: CEO, National Health Authority

FICCI HEAL

NEW DELHI, 13 October 2022: Accentuating the importance of healthcare digitization, Dr. R S Sharma, CEO, of the National Health Authority yesterday said that the initiative can bring several desirable attributes to the healthcare system.

Addressing the FICCI HEAL 2022 (concluding day) Dr. Sharma said, “Digitization will result in a number of desirable attributes in the healthcare sector. It will make health provisions more affordable and accessible and improve the quality as well.”

Dr. Harsha Rajaram, Co-Chair, of the FICCI Digital Health Task Force; Chief Operating Officer, of Aster Telehealth- India & GCC lauded the initiatives taken by the government in creating a conducive ecosystem for promoting digital health. “Digital health would help to bridge the gap in the healthcare system, and ensure both affordability and accessibility,” he added. FICCI has been working with the government and industry members, since 2012, on the building blocks for digitization, including Electronic Health Record Standards and National Health Stack.

Discussing the role of technology in the healthcare sector, Mr. Dhruv Sukhrani, Partner, Bain & Company India stated, “We have seen pre-Covid, Covid times and post-Covid times; all the 3 phases were different and health tech was born during this time. We believe that Covid has accelerated the shift towards digital models of care.” He added that from the behavioral perspective, both doctors and patients are seeing a move toward digitization.

Speaking on the ‘Cost Quality Conundrum’, Dr. Shankar Prinja, Executive Director (HP&QA), National Health Authority underscored the initiatives taken by the central government to control healthcare costs. “We have gone a long way since the time the health benefits package was first conceived under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. Today we have tried developing a strong database of healthcare costs. This year we announced a new health package where we have increased the prices of 800+ packages under PMJAY,” he added.

Dr. YP Bhatia, Managing Director, Astron Hospital & Healthcare Consultant said, “I believe one subject is missing in our country, i.e. health economics. There has to be a comprehensive system through which the cost of quality can be worked on.”

Dr. Atul Kochhar, the CEO, of NABH, said, “India is getting serious about healthcare. We are a young population, and this young population spends more on healthcare. They are more aware and understand the need to invest in healthcare.”

Earlier during the day, acknowledging the rapid evolution of the healthcare sector across the globe, Dr. Manohar Agnani, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said that India can serve the global community by strengthening the healthcare system, but for that, it needs to focus on quality.

“We are one of the youngest nations, which provides us with the opportunity to serve the global community. But to do that we need to focus on quality. We have excellent service providers and hospitals, both in the public and private sectors of the country,” added Dr. Agnani.

Mr. Lav Agarwal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, GoI while highlighting the government initiatives on making India a global healthcare hub said, “Under Heal in India initiative, the government aims at ensuring value-based healthcare where if the patient from one country does not have treatment in their country, they can come and travel to our county and avail treatment. The Heal by India initiative talks about health workforce mobility where the Indian workforce can be a brand ambassador for India across the world.”

Sharing his thoughts on the strengthening of the healthcare workforce, Dr. Narottam Puri, Principal Advisor-QCI; Board Member & Former Chairman- NABH; Advisor- FICCI Health Services; Advisor- Medical Operations, Fortis Healthcare Ltd. said, “If the public and private sectors are to work together, the two have to find a common ground. PPPs have been happening, but we need to improve them, for that Communication is important. We need to be supportive and not critical. We need to find solutions.”

During the Session on ‘Making Cancer Care accessible and affordable, Mr. Raj Gore, Co-Chair of, the FICCI Task Force on Cancer Care and CEO, of Healthcare Global Enterprises Limited (HCG), said, “To address the dual challenge of rising incidents and sub-optimal mortality to the ratio of the incident, the country must focus on large-scale awareness campaigns on risk factors, symptoms, screening & treating options, effective prevention, alcohol, obesity, improved screening projects & avoiding unnecessary stigma attached to the disease.”

Dr. Rajendra Badwe, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai suggested that for Cervical cancer, good screening mortality either VIA or Pap smear should be good enough, but keep in mind- reducing the cost and increasing the efficacy without increasing the numbers.

Dr. Kaushal Kalra, HoD- Oncology, Safdarjung Hospital stressed the importance of making robotic-assisted surgery more affordable. “We need training for robotic surgery, new technology used in therapies costs a lot as they are newly invented medications. The lower and middle classes can’t afford it,” he said.

Expressing his views on the high cost of robotic-assisted surgery, Mr. Mandeep Singh Kumar, VP and GM, Intuitive India suggested that in 2019, IRDA included robotics surgeries in the health insurance that is also included in hospitals today. “We have also worked with insurance companies and many of them now have robotics in their coverage. We partnered with hospitals to see how we can have easy access to technology and jointly we were able to solve the problem,” he added.

The three-day FICCI HEAL 2022 organized on the theme ‘Healthcare Transformation: Driving India’s Economic Growth’ was inaugurated by Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar, Hon’ble Vice President of India. The 14th edition of FICCI Healthcare Excellence Awards 2022 was presented by Ms. Smriti Zubin Irani, Minister of Women & Child Development and Minority Affairs, GoI. The conference also featured the da Vinci Xi surgical system of Intuitive, showcasing advanced robotic surgical technologies.

Forescout Researchers Reveal the Riskiest IT, IoT, OT and IoMT Devices in Enterprise Networks, Popular Trends, and Mitigation Techniques

India, October 13, 2022: Forescout Technologies, the global leader in automated cybersecurity, recently analyzed the various evolving complexity of the riskiest devices landscape in 2022. The report includes Vedere Labs’ findings analyzing millions of devices in Forescout’s Device Cloud using the Forescout Continuum Platform’s new multifactor risk scoring methodology.

To get a dataset representative of the current device landscape in enterprise networks, Vedere Labs analyzed device data between January 1 and April 30 in Forescout’s Device Cloud, one of the world’s largest repositories of connected enterprise device data including IT, OT, IoT, and IoMT. The report also covers the three factors on the basis of which the risk of a device is calculated:

  • Configuration considers the number and severity of vulnerabilities on the device as well as the number and criticality of open ports.
  • The function considers the potential impact on the organization if the device is compromised.
  • Behavior considers the reputation of inbound connections to and outbound connections from the device, along with its internet exposure.

It also highlights the five riskiest devices in four device categories: IT, IoT, OT, and IoMT; what makes these devices so risky and their distribution by industry (financial, government, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail) and geography (Americas; Asia-Pacific; Europe; and Middle East, Turkey and Africa):

  • IT – Router, computer, server, wireless access point, hypervisor
  • IoT – IP camera, VoIP, video conferencing, ATM, printer
  • OT – PLC, HMI, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), environmental monitoring, building automation controller
  • IoMT – DICOM workstation, nuclear medicine system, imagine, picture archiving and communications system (PACS), patient monitor

Additionally, two recurring themes in the recent research of Vedere Labs have been the growing attack surface due to more devices being connected to enterprise networks and how threat actors leverage these devices to achieve their goals. The attack surface now encompasses IT, IoT, and OT in almost every organization, with the addition of IoMT in healthcare. The researchers demonstrated this with R4IoT, an attack that starts with an IP camera (IoT), moves to a workstation (IT), and disables PLCs (OT).

The report significantly identifies the change in mitigation techniques too. The Forescout Continuum Platform solves the risk assessment problem by continuously discovering, granularly classifying, and assessing devices without agents or active techniques that could compromise business operations. It mentions that after understanding the attack surface, it is important to mitigate risk with automated controls that do not rely only on security agents and that apply to the whole enterprise, instead of silos like the IT network, the OT network, or specific types of IoT devices. Forescout Continuum enables these types of controls by accelerating the design and deployment of dynamic network segmentation across the digital terrain while also automating policy enforcement by enabling countermeasures to mitigate threats, incidents, and compliance gaps.

OMRON Healthcare Upgrades its Home Blood Pressure Monitors into Connected Devices

OMRON

Hyderabad, October 13, 2022: OMRON Healthcare, a global leader in home blood pressure monitoring and solutions for cardiovascular disease management, has upgraded its portfolio of BP monitors by converting them into “connected” devices. This significant upgrade in the portfolio will help users and healthcare practitioners gain seamless, effortless, more real-time, and accurate control over hypertension management.

The devices, now connected, allow the blood pressure data transfer effortlessly through OMRON’s application called ‘OMRON connect’- India’s one-of-its-kind mobile app in the telehealth segment for BP – with the help of inbuilt Bluetooth technology in the devices facilitating real-time and convenient tracking both for the users as well as physicians.

“Remote patient monitoring relies on connected devices to bridge the distance between a doctor and a patient. The upgrade by OMRON is a big leap in the right direction to achieve our Going for Zero vision that aims to help the people of India prevent health event recurrence in the cardiovascular health space. It will redefine the role of a blood pressure monitor and the way we manage hypertension by giving consumers more power in managing their blood pressure, by providing physicians more insights to evolve treatment, and by widening the scope of personalized treatment,” said Mr. Kotaro Suzuki, Managing Director, OMRON Healthcare India on the launch.

Numerous randomized controlled trials have documented that Self Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring with Clinical Support (SMBP) – training patients to regularly monitor and record their own blood pressure at home with a personal device and rely on clinical support as needed- is an effective way for successful BP control regimen and effective prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

The App makes it easy to record, view, and wirelessly sync a user’s blood pressure data and provides an easy-to-use dashboard for viewing recent measurements, tracking progress, and sending medication reminders. The data can also be easily exported and shared across any medium (email, WhatsApp) and format (Excel, PDF, etc.). making it possible to have real-time supervision with physicians. Data from OMRON-connected devices can be shared with other Health Apps too.

To make the application accessible to more people across India who are still using the older variants of OMRON BP Monitors, OMRON has also introduced the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology feature which allows to capture & record BP readings of non-connected OMRON devices and transfers it to phone.
A unique feature “BP Diary” has also been included in the app which gives an automated and easy way to keep a record and advisory for a person’s BP readings & management in accordance with his lifestyle along with monitoring & medication reminders.

All the BP monitors offered by OMRON Healthcare are clinically validated for accuracy and meet the highest international standards of precision and reliability. They also use patented Intellisense technology and IntelliWrap™ 360° accuracy cuff to ensure precise measurement in a home environment.
