Exploring the Future of Genomics: GDDB 2025 Hosts Global Leaders in Disease Biology Kolkata, 4th June 2025: The JIS Institute of Advanced Studies and Research (JISIASR) hosted the International Symposium on Genetic Diversity and Disease Biology (GDDB 2025) at the JIS School of Medical Science and Research, Santragachi. The event brought together distinguished global scientists working in the fields of human and microbial genomics for a day of impactful discussion, innovation sharing, and academic exchange.

Following an inaugural ceremony graced by JIS Group dignitaries and prominent national and international researchers, the symposium unfolded across two technical sessions alongside a vibrant poster presentation competition featuring PhD scholars from institutions across Kolkata.

The first session, chaired by Padma Shri Prof. Ajoy Kumar Ray, Director, JISIASR, focused on non-communicable disease research. Keynote speaker Prof. Partha Pratim Majumder highlighted critical genomic alterations in oral cancer, including driver mutations and transcriptomic shifts in precancerous lesions, while Prof. Ananyo Choudhury delved into the promise and complexity of precision medicine, emphasising the role of genetic variants in disease risk prediction and drug response optimization.

The second session, chaired by Prof. Rukhsana Chowdhury, explored communicable disease genomics. Prof. Steffen Backert presented findings on Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastric cancer development through Type IV secretion systems and bacterial SNPs. Prof. Santasabuj Das concluded the session with insights on how genomic diversity drives pathogen virulence, underlining the potential of genome-wide association studies and machine learning approaches in identifying key genetic traits linked to infectious diseases.

On this occasion, Sardar Simarpreet Singh, Director, JIS Group, said, “At JIS Group, we believe the future of healthcare lies in decoding the language of our genes. GDDB 2025 wasn’t just a symposium—it was a confluence of minds determined to rewrite the way we understand, prevent, and treat disease through cutting-edge genomic science.”
