Quantum Introduces Scalar Ransom Block, An Industry-First Solution That Creates Physical Block Between Data Tapes And Robotic Tape System

New feature can be initiated remotely and instantly, ensures data stored on tape is completely offline and secure, provides ultimate level of data security for cyber-resilient archives

BANGALORE, India – November 09, 2021- Quantum Corporation (NASDAQ: QMCO) today announced its latest innovations to protect against ransomware and other forms of cyberattacks. Quantum’s Scalar® Ransom Block is an industry-first feature of Quantum’s Scalar tape systems that eliminates the risk of data being accessed or compromised over the network. This patent-pending feature creates a hardware “block” between data stored on tapes and every network-connected device including the robotic tape system, as shown in this short video.

Ransom Block can be initiated remotely, does not require any person to handle tapes, ensures data cannot be accessed over the network even if the tape library is hacked, and preserves the ability to audit the tape library so customers know their data is safe and secure.

“The threat of ransomware and other forms of cyber-attacks are one of the chief concerns of our customers,” says Jamie Lerner, chairman and CEO of Quantum. “Tape storage systems are a critical part of building cyber-resilient infrastructures, both for large archives and as part of a comprehensive data protection strategy. However, even data stored on tapes can be compromised if the tape library itself is hacked, which is why we designed these new features in partnership with a large cloud provider. Quantum Scalar Ransom Block is an industry-first solution that ensures data is protected and secure with a click of a button and provides the ultimate layer of protection for data stored on tape.”

Ensure Your Data on Tape is Safe from Attack with Quantum Scalar Ransom Block

Cyber threats are unrelenting, and data is being encrypted, stolen, and leaked on the dark web. According to a recent study by analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) of more than 300 IT and line of business executives, two out of five respondents reported that their organizations had experienced successful ransomware attacks, and more than 80 percent had paid ransoms to retrieve their data.1 When ransomware breaches a network successfully, the monetary damage can be substantial, as are the risks from downtime of critical systems, lost revenue and damaged reputation.

Tape systems are a critical part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure data is protected and quickly recoverable in the event of a ransomware attack. Tape systems are inherently more secure than hard drive (HDD) or flash (SSD) storage systems because the data stored on tape is not connected to the network. However, because the tape library itself is a network connected device, there is still some risk of a remote hack in the unlikely event the tape library itself is hacked. To address this risk in a simple, automated way, Quantum designed the Scalar Ransom Block feature.

How Ransom Block Works

Tapes stored in the library sit in a magazine. Quantum’s patent-pending design partially ejects the magazine so the tapes cannot be selected by the robot until an operator physically re-inserts the magazine. Because the magazine is only partially ejected, the barcode scanner on the robot can still scan the tape barcodes, so that system administrators can perform periodic audits of the tape system to ensure tapes are still present.

The tapes are inaccessible until an operator, who must have physical access to the tape library, re-inserts the magazine. Tape systems can be stored in secure data centers that require badged access.

In addition, Quantum has introduced Logical Tape Blocking, which enables administrators to use software commands to prevent tapes from being loaded into a drive while the magazine is being filled with tapes, before it is ejected.  Although still software-based and not a physical blocking mechanism, this new capability further reduces the risk window until Ransom Block is initiated.

Latest Innovations are Part of a Comprehensive Security Framework

Ransom Block and Logical Tape Blocking are the latest innovations that are part of a comprehensive security framework that make Scalar tape systems to be one of the most secure tape storage systems on the market.

Many features are unique to Quantum Scalar Tape Systems2, including:

  • Scalar Ransom Block and Logical Tape Blocking to ensure data stored on tape is secure, even in the event of a remote hack.
  • Scalar Active Vault enables tapes to be moved into a secure, isolated in-library vault partition that has no network connectivity and is not visible to any application or network.
  • Scalar Media Security Alerts notify the administrator when media is removed – either expectedly or unexpectedly – from the library.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication can be enabled for administrator and user logins, providing additional security for access control.

These unique features are part of over 25 features and capabilities that form the Quantum Scalar Security Framework, a comprehensive security framework that controls system access, provides system monitoring and event detection, data security and encryption, and unique features for cyber protection and data integrity.

Availability and Pricing

Ransom Block and Logical Tape Blocking are expected to be available on new Scalar i6 and Scalar i3 tape libraries in December 2021. The remaining features listed as part of the Quantum Scalar Security Framework are generally available today. Certain features are sold separately, and not all features are available on all models. Meta Strengthens Commitment To India’s Small Businesses; Launches Localized Business Hub At The Inaugural Edition ‘Grow Your Business Summit’

New Delhi, 9th November 2021: Meta has strengthened its commitment to the small businesses of India by launching the inaugural edition of the ‘Grow Your Business Summit’, an event focused on the growth agenda of the country’s small and medium businesses (SMB). The summit saw emerging and small businesses from distinct verticals, and from across the country, including small towns and rural India, attend the event and share their stories of how they transformed their business using digital technologies and apps by Meta. During the summit the company also announced the launch of ‘Grow Your Business Hub’, a one-stop destination for the micro, small, and medium businesses to find relevant information, tools, and resources curated to cater to their business goals based on their growth journey.

Every month millions of small businesses – 15 million just on WhatsApp in India – use the Meta apps every month to start their online journeys, and grow their business. Increasingly these businesses are able to have global reach because of Facebook and Instagram, with more than 300 million people either liking or following an Indian small business page on Facebook. On Instagram, over the past three months, people in India have created more than 1.2 million posts and comments to show their support for small businesses and buying local. More than half-a-million small businesses on Instagram in India have also listed either a WhatsApp number, or a phone number, or an email in their bio, or are encouraging potential customers to contact them directly via DM. This goes to show that increasingly small businesses are leveraging the Meta apps to go direct-to-consumer.

Said Archana Vohra, Director, Small & Medium Business, Facebook India, “Small businesses are the engines of growth for India’s economy, and the role of Meta is more important than ever in unlocking growth opportunities for them as many of them move online and use digital to grow. From curated and customized business skilling programs to launching initiatives that enable working capital for small businesses, we have been building for the growth of India’s SMBs with a localized, India-first approach. Keeping in mind the unique needs of small businesses at various stages of their growth journey, today we’re also announcing ‘Grow Your Business Hub’, a one-stop destination for small businesses to find resources curated to their goals.”

In addition to ‘Grow Your Business Hub’, the inaugural edition of the summit also saw the launch of ‘Grow Your Business Playbook’ that is geared to inspire and equip early stage businesses to start their journeys on our apps. The Playbook is Facebook India’s first published book on everything small businesses need to know from starting a business page, creating content on the page, to the first steps they need to take to start advertising. The playbook’s first edition is aimed at helping businesses set up offline to online journeys and accelerating online sales for small businesses during the COVID-19 era and beyond.

These new resources come on the back of several initiatives and interventions that Facebook has launched in the recent months to support the growth of small businesses. Most recently, Facebook launched the ‘Small Business Loans Initiative’ to enable business loans for Facebook’s small business advertisers through third-party lenders.

The India findings of a Facebook commissioned study by Deloitte “Dynamic Markets, Unlocking small business innovation and growth through the rise of the personalized economy” from May 2021 found that more than 80% small businesses in India claim Facebook apps were important to making their business stronger today and allowing them to compete in the market. More than 80% surveyed SMBs also reported that personalized ads were important to the success of their business, to effectively reaching new customers, and for achieving a higher return on marketing spend.

Akamai Redefines WAAP Simplicity and Automation with New App & API Protector

Bengaluru, India – November 9, 2021 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the world’s most trusted solution to power and protect digital experiences, today announces the launch of App & API Protector, the company’s next-generation web application and API protection (WAAP) solution. It provides a holistic set of powerful protections built for today’s modern applications and APIs with intelligent automation and simplicity.

Last month, Akamai released its latest State of the Internet / Security report, ‘API: The Attack Surface That Connects Us All,’ which highlighted the challenges organizations face in the evolving threat landscape, especially given that Gartner reported APIs will be the most frequent online attack vector by 2022. In fact, by design, API calls are easier and faster to automate than other software endpoints, making them an increasingly appealing target for cybercriminals.

With App & API Protector, Akamai customers have a single, integrated WAAP solution that is designed to deliver the strongest security outcomes, without compromising simplicity and ease of use. Key benefits include:

Automatic API discovery and security—Mitigate API-related risks and vulnerabilities with continuous discovery of known, unknown, and evolving APIs. API requests are automatically discovered and inspected for malicious code; and optional API security controls can be enforced at the edge to activate positive API security models. Gartner’s 2021 Critical Capabilities report gave Akamai the top spot for the use case on API programmability and security.

Adaptive and more accurate detections—Detect up to two times more attacks compared to traditional rulesets. Adaptive, threat-based detection employs a multidimensional threat scoring model that combines Akamai’s platform intelligence with data/metadata from each web and API request. This data is actioned with decision-making logic that accurately identifies and stops stealthy attacks with surgical-grade precision.

Continuous self-tuning—Akamai’s Adaptive Security Engine not only keeps pace with rapidly evolving threats but reduces false positives by up to five times to alleviate the effort required to maintain and tune policies. Security triggers, whether true attacks or those misidentified as attacks, are automatically and continuously analyzed with machine learning to deliver highly accurate policy-by-policy tuning recommendations with a 1-click implementation.

Built-in bot mitigation—Automatically detect and mitigate unwanted bots with built-in bot visibility and mitigation capabilities. Akamai’s industry-leading bot technology features an expansive directory of 1,500+ known bots and provides customers with the ability to create and define bots to proactively monitor analytics and prevent attacks. For more persistent, adversarial bot operators, Akamai offers it’s category-leading Bot Manager solution to mitigate that threat.

Automatic updates—Enable a “hands off” approach to WAAP with adaptive protections fully managed by Akamai. Our world-class security researchers use advanced machine learning and data mining techniques to continuously analyze over 303TB of daily attack data and automatically update protections against the latest threats. Customers can also opt for manual/evaluation mode of operation to minimize any unexpected impact of new updates.

DevOps integration made simple—Easily integrate WAAP capabilities using the Akamai CLI, Terraform, or scripts in the CI/CD automation pipeline. Enable rapid onboarding of applications, ensure uniform security policy management across large application and API portfolios, and centralize security enforcement across hybrid and multi-cloud infrastructures.

“As the online threat landscape continues to evolve, the need for a holistic, adaptive approach to web application and API security is clear. With the introduction of our new App & API Protector, Akamai customers now have a single, holistic solution that makes sophisticated protection extremely simple,” said Amol Mathur, Vice President of Product Management, Akamai. “This builds on Akamai’s proven security technologies, introducing new levels of sophisticated, automated intelligence to keep our customers a step ahead of the cybercriminals.”

In September, Akamai was named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Web Application and API Protection report and placed highest in the Ability to Execute among the companies evaluated for their ability to protect web applications and APIs. In addition, Akamai also received the highest scores for three of the four Use Cases in the 2021 Gartner Critical Capabilities for Cloud Web Application and API Protection report, including the API Security Use Case.

2) What made you choose this field and how has your journey as an entrepreneur been so far?

I feel this field is something I grew into. It was a passion that Luke and I used to talk about and this has turned into this amazing organization that we have created. My journey has been nothing short of amazing. From the learnings I have had, the people I have got to work with and of course the clients that our team impacts on a daily basis, is what makes everything we do so totally worth it.

3) The Covid-19 pandemic restricted all of us within our countries, cities and homes. In the wake of this unprecedented time, how did you manage to lead a team of more than a hundred people and keep their spirits high?

The one thing that really worked for us during these trying times was that we always were an online company to begin with. So, working from home was something we were always comfortable with as a team. The change of course was now that everyone else was home too, including our kids and spouses. This is where we realized that the team needed some more time to invest in household chores as well (with a lot of maids being out of action too). We tried to reduce workload for the team as much as we could. Meetings and training sessions were reduced wherever possible. If some nutritionist needed fewer clients to handle, we did that as well.

Having said this, I think, the team did an amazing job during these times to make sure work and life balance was maintained on both fronts and this is another reason why I’m just so proud of our team.

We also make it a point to appreciate the team regularly. It is one thing we as an organisation do not take for granted.

Natashya Phillips Coutinho

4) What is the vision and the mission of YouCare? How do you envisage spreading awareness of the importance of self-care across the globe?

Like we always say, we strive to put the “care” back into “healthcare”. This is the shortest way I can explain our vision and mission.

We already have a global presence but we do plan on maintaining it. The plan is to continue doing what we do, day on day. From the nuggets of wisdom that Luke shares every day, to the various clients and the team of experts who consult around the world, we have to just keep doing our best and we hope that through the experiences our clients have had, the message that we believe in gets passed on.

The team along with Luke has also started spreading awareness on various health related topics as often as they can. Each individual can only take an X number of consults everyday but through the information we put out on our platforms for free, we hope we can help and reach out to more people and inspire change.

5) You have an experienced and diversified expert panel available for consultations. What are the factors you look for when you bring experts on board with you?

Since the team is dealing with people with specific health conditions, of course the main prerequisite is that they have the right qualifications for the post. Over and above that, we look for passion, drive and compassion. Empathy is also an important part of what they do.

The clients usually sign up with us for a minimum period of 3-months, so being able to connect with the clients and build rapport with them is key. You can’t really motivate someone to do something they don’t want too, but with the right coaching strategy and connection, we have seen our clients coming a long way in terms of their health goals.

The skills that they come with can always be enhanced or improved through training but if they don’t have the right mindset or willingness to learn, then we know that they will not fit in our vision.

We have clients who start off with us for 3-months and now have almost their entire family and extended family on our programs too. This is only because of the positive connection our team has had on them.

6) Being the CEO of a leading wellness brand, what lies ahead for the wellness and nutrition industry? How is this sector going to transform in the coming times?

The one thing that the pandemic has brought in, is definitely an increase in awareness of one’s own health and well-being. Everyone is now more aware and most importantly wants to work on their health.

We have seen more and more people coming to us with questions about where they can find cleaner sources of food. We have more people now who want to get their parameters checked and make sure that they are doing what’s right for them. And it is good to see that they are already thinking about prevention.

Prevention has always been something we have been talking about for years but now clients are looking for it on their own too. Technology, of course, is also going to be a huge driving force for everyone and us too.

7) How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?

I am at this happy place right now where I feel like a work-life balance has just become easier with schooling being from home too. Also, with Tyanna, my daughter who is already 8, I feel she has also become so independent. She manages most of her school work and routine on her own.

I have a routine and I manage to stick to it almost 90% of the time. The reason I say I’m in a happy place right now is because I feel it’s more like a habit everyday than something that I need to remember to do. Just like brushing our teeth, it just happens.

Of course, I like finishing my workout in the morning and then starting work. I try to wrap up work at a set time daily and then it’s just my family and me. I also love spending some time with just me.

8) If you were not doing what you do today, what would you choose to do?

I have been asked this a couple of times. Before I started off at Team Luke, I thoroughly enjoyed my previous job at IBM India. If I had to go back to any other role, it would probably be that one. And, if I were to think of a new career option, I would most likely start a little cafe or bakery and experiment with new food, since I enjoy baking a lot.
