Trends Expected in Healthcare, Telemedicine, Medtech & Pharma Industry in 2022

“While there may not seem to be a definite end game strategy insight for eliminating the pandemic in 2022, it is now becoming evident that those who have been fully vaccinated or infected are showing much better outcomes with mild clinical symptoms. This gives hope that we’re reaching a stage of transition from pandemic to an endemic disease stage, hopefully soon. However, 2022 seems to be having a rough start with the Omicron variant changing few predictions and timelines. India should definitely brace itself for a peak in February, however, based on findings so far, the hospitalisation rate has been low. This is a relief and hence steps to minimise transmission could go a long way. However, we’re already 2 years into the pandemic and there is an obvious fatigue amongst the masses, thus emphasis should go back to the basics with mask etiquette etc being the focus.

However, with the ongoing vaccination drive and the correct and timely decision by central government to push vaccination for young adults plus booster dose for select segments, we’re taking all the right steps. The 2nd half of 2022 gives hope that we will have a stronger line of sight of the endgame. Newer batches of booster dose and cheaper, faster testing protocol will play key roles over next 12 months though. Overall, 2022 should be the year of innovation and grassroots penetration with newer diagnostic research & development in home diagnosis, affordable & easy to implement molecular testing and digital care using IoT.

COVID-19 as we know it should become a mild flu or seasonal virus IN 12-18 months window and annual booster doses will become the norm. There are however still a lot of unknowns and a new dominant variant could again change these timelines.”

“With its new variants, the year 2022 will be a year of Covid once more. The year 2021 was a challenging one for India’s health sector, as the lethal second wave of coronavirus struck. As a result, an unprecedented number of people lost their lives and there was unparalleled suffering for countless others. It did, however, serve as a valuable lesson for the entire healthcare industry, leading to the resurrection and upgrading of health infrastructure in both the public and private sectors. We not only have a completely functional oxygen plant but are also now fully equipped to face new challenges, such as Omicron, with a team of experienced doctors and paramedical staff. I strongly advise everyone to take both doses of the vaccine, if already not taken. Also, continue to observe social distancing measures, wear masks, practice hand hygiene and adhere to all the guidelines issued by the Indian government.”

Aashish Chaudhry

Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director, Aakash Healthcare, Dwarka

“Next year will be another year of Covid, but we are fully prepared to meet any challenges that come our way. Aakash Healthcare is ready for 2022, with a solid infrastructure in place to help counteract the possibility of Covid’s third wave. Since last year, the hospital has been working in close collaboration with the government to provide critical care to COVID-19 patients in the pandemic and has earned the reputation of being one of the most sought-after centres for personalized care during COVID times. As the New Year approaches, we hope to complete the trials for the children’s Covid vaccine. As a  part of our overall development and expansion plans, we will establish a World Class Bone and Joint program/hospital in Gurgaon by next year. The new venture will serve as an Orthopedics, Joint Replacement, and Spine Hospital. In addition, we intend to open a new Cancer Hospital in Dwarka. which will provide comprehensive cancer care including Radiation and BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant).

We are almost about to launch our State of the art Liver Transplant Program at our existing Dwarka Hospital, Multiple clinics, as well as Super Speciality Hospitals, are about to crop up in North India. A couple of our international projects are also in the pipeline for 2022.”

Mr. Ashok Patel, Founder and CEO, max Ventilator

Mr. Ashok Patel, CEO and Founder, Max Ventilator(India’s leading ventilator manufacturer)

“Doctors say that the pandemic will always be there till at least  6 years. So all the businesses are prepared to deal with it. Even as Covid-19 has led to the rise of diagnostics and equipment along with an impressive rise in virtual and homecare-driven device segments, there has been an increased emphasis on making low-cost lifesaving devices such as ventilators and oxygen concentrators. Speaking especially of ventilators, from now onwards, the rule of 4 beds per ventilator will become more of a reality. With telemedicine and app-based online pharmacies becoming more of a constant surrounding our daily lives spurring innovations in related devices and equipment, the coming year will also see more action in big data, AI and machine learning-based disease prediction technologies, apart from a push to more sophisticated surgical devices meant for a range of conditions such as neurological, cardio-vascular, oncological, orthopedic or musculosketal conditions. However I must add that for AI-based ventilators to become a reality, more time would be needed. While make-in-India has gained momentum with the view to become more self-reliant, the Chinese products have received a setback. This means that quality will determine the entry of new products and more rigorous quality checks will increasingly become a norm. The coming year will also see major investment and focus on medical device components and parts in the country. At the same time, given the surging omicron cases outside India and a repeat of the same not totally being out of question in India, Covid-related devices and equipment will continue to remain a focus of attention of manufacturers in the country in the coming year.”

‘Fintech and NBFCs Partnership can Bring Credit Revolution in the Country’: PayPoint India MD Ketan Doshi at ASSOCHAM 8th National E-Summit

Hyderabad/Mumbai, December 31, 2021: Fintech companies can bring efficient onboarding of customers and offer seamless collection support at a negligible cost at the last mile touchpoints, stated Mr. Ketan Doshi, Managing Director of PayPoint India, at the recently held 8th ASSOCHAM National E-Summit on the NBFC sector.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Ketan Doshi said, “NBFCs are going to be the forefront of the credit outreach which is required in the country, and this can happen with the partnership model with Fintech. It can bring credit revolution in the country.”

“Pandemic has facilitated banks and NBFCs to join hands with Fintechs. Lenders are now looking for fintech partnerships serving the last mile mainly for customer onboarding as customer acquisition and collection costs are pretty high. With the help of NBFCs decision-making tools along with Fintech’s payment tools, credit can be disbursed within 5 mins, and the costs can also be bought down by around 65%.” Mr. Doshi added.

While most people cannot come to the mainstream because of the scarcity of capital, credit should also be made available to the underserved for the economy to grow. If the last mile is touched via the partnership model, there is considerable headroom for credit growth and greater financial inclusion. Also, government initiatives like OCEN (Open Credit Enablement Network) and Account aggregation can change the entire lending landscape in the coming year.

At the summit, the panelists also underlined that NBFCs have deeper penetration in rural markets and have played a significant role in the financial inclusion agenda. Today, NBFCs’ partnership with fintech companies is leading the way to the future of financial services. This partnership model is developed fundamentally to serve underserved customers who otherwise find it hard to access credit.

The summit also deliberated upon the outlook of Overall NBFCs & MFIs Sector, Deep-Dive into the Infrastructure and Housing Finance. Other Industry stalwarts such as Shri Alexander Muthoot – MD of The Muthoot Group, Shri Amit Gainda- MD & CEO of Avanse Financial Services Ltd., Shri Amit Gupta – CFO of U GRO Capital, Shri Sanjay Rudra – General Manager, Large & Mid Corporate of Bank of Maharashtra, Shri Samik Dasgupta – General Manager, and HOD NPA Management and Legal of IIFCL, Shri Ashok Soni – ED, of PFRDA, Dr. M. Narendra – Former CMD of Indian Overseas Bank also addressed the discussions.

CM Soren pitches in leading B- school to develop forest economy

Govt of Jharkhand collaborates with ISB to develop forest economy

Ranchi, December 31st: Taking a significant step towards creating jobs and wealth through a model of sustainable development, the Government of Jharkhand collaborated with Indian School of Business for a unique initiative to empower the state’s forest economy. In an event to mark the second anniversary of Hemant Soren-led government today, the Department of Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, Minority and Backward Class Welfare along the Department of Forests, Jharkhand, signed an MoU with the Bharti Institute of Public Policy at Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad, to develop scalable and sustainable solutions focussing on forest-based industrial value chains.

“Our approach is to build and formalise linkages between major stakeholders in existing value chains for forest-based industrial raw material while creating incentives for sustainable forest management. We will facilitate institutional and technological capacity building of communities. This vision will contribute towards meeting India’s global commitments for sustainable development,” said Prof Ashwini Chhatre, Executive Director, Bharti Institute of Public Policy, ISB, while formalising the collaboration with Naman Priyesh Lakra, Welfare Commissioner, Government of Jharkhand, in the presence of Governor Ramesh Bais and Chief Minister Hemant Soren in the state capital today morning.

In January 2020, the Chief Minister, less than a month old in office, had approached ISB to propose a cluster-based strategy for development of forest economy in the state. Based on research on the current scale and future potential of existing value chains, the team of researchers from ISB, led by Prof Chhatre, proposed an institutional design to facilitate sustainable forest management, value addition, and industrial procurement of seasonal forest products.

The ISB team plans to pilot this approach in Gumla district, before expanding to other districts with promising forest products. For this, the researchers have prepared an action plan, starting with creating incentives for local communities by establishing Community Forest Resource rights under the Forest Rights Act. The team is also working closely with Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (the nodal agency for the National Rural Livelihoods Mission in Jharkhand) for supporting this vision through women’s self-help groups (SHG).

“We will prepare a business plan based on market demand for select forest products in Gumla and assess the need for capital investments in infrastructure for collection, storage, processing, and transportation of forest products through women-centric forest-based enterprises. We will build the capacity of SHG leaders for product aggregation and pre-processing through technological enhancements,” explains Shreya Jain, Research Associate, ISB.

The lynchpin of the initiative is a partnership between local communities as the custodians of forest resources; industry leaders using the products of that forest, and government agencies facilitating and regulating the creation of jobs and wealth. This unique project also represents a triple-win opportunity by reducing environmental threats, creating jobs at the bottom of the pyramid, and establishing sustainable forest management systems.

“We seek to establish active collaborations with government agencies, academic institutions, private companies, and civil society organizations in Jharkhand to address the tremendous potential of forests to create jobs and wealth while also mitigating adverse environmental impacts,” added Prof Chhatre.

Health cover – its trends in 2021 and what to expect in 2022

Raghavendra Rao, Chief Distribution Officer, Future Generali IndiaBy Raghavendra Rao, Chief Distribution Officer, Future Generali India Insurance

General Insurance industry has been growing with a study pace which is considerably stimulated by soaring growth from Health Insurance segment.

Onset of pandemic in 2019 at global stage, resulted not only multitudinous increase in sales of health insurance policies but also in Product and Service augmentation.

Existing situation compelled most of the health insurers to rejig and recalibrate the existing product and process strategies.

Soon after outbreak of pandemic, IRDAI made Covid-19 cover, a mandatory offering under affordable standard COVID-19 products which would take care of expenses related to COVID-19, including expenses incurred due to ‘home quarantine’, even if one do not have medical insurance, was introduced. The existing policies would have taken care of only hospitalization expenses only.

Products like Arogya Sanjeevani, with standard coverages across all insurers were also introduced by regulator with aim of extensive coverage at competitive rates.

Covid made people realise the need to protect the loved ones without any financial impediments and health insurance emerged as one of the best solutions to achieve this.

The foremost impact has been digitalisation of entire health insurance sector. Digitalised documentation & Claim process made things easy for policy aspirants with better TATs, enhanced customer satisfaction & dwindling the chances of miss-selling.

The industry has demonstrated the ability to rise to the situation. The high growth trajectory indicates the continuous improvements and innovations across all aspects of health insurance.

Augmented products & services like short waiting period, enhanced coverages, no sub-limits policies have become the order of the day.

FGII has always been a forerunner in innovative product and service offerings. FGII introduced products that provides home healthcare services and allows insured to be treated from the comforts of home.

Introduction of Instalment facility for premium payment along with Cashless claim settlement facility has been a quantum leap making health Insurance more affordable and prompting prospects to opt for higher SI coverages. FGII with more than 6000 cashless hospitals and less than 2 hrs cashless claim settlement has played a harbinger role.

Modern day lifestyle where stress, depression, anxiety are creeping in, along with physical health a greater awareness towards mental health is required. Thereby need for health insurance that covers mental ailments is felt. FGII ensures that most of its product offerings provides such mental health coverages.

In the year 2022 in my view greater focus would be mental illness on OPD basis, wellness products and shorter waiting period for specific illness can be seen.
