The Lexicon MILE hosts Pankaj Jha- renowned Bollywood actor and TV personality for an interactive session with the students

Pune, August, 2022: The Lexicon Management Institute of Leadership and Excellence recently hosted the renowned Bollywood actor and TV personality, Pankaj Jha, at the Wagholi Campus. The session was conducted to give students an elaborate understanding of what builds the character of a leader and what qualities one must possess to be successful in life. What better way to do this than to have someone who has experienced it all and can guide and mentor young minds through the most crucial phase of life?

Lexicon MILE is dedicated to empowering students through real-life situations and preparing them for real-world challenges. From workshops to sessions with well-known personalities who guide students through inspirational conversations, students at Lexicon MILE strive to thrive and excel in their academic program and future as well through these interactive sessions.

This session with Mr. Jha was in particular a personal favorite among many students as they got a glimpse into crucial life lessons coupled with humor and laughter. Mr. Jha was seen building a quick rapport with the students, connecting with them through his warmth and jovial spirit while sharing insights into some of the most significant lessons he endured during his life. He also shared some anecdotes from his personal life to illustrate the importance of living in the moment, setting realistic goals for yourself, and taking the time you need to meet them. He advised the students to consciously step away from the rat race and unhealthy competition, which can adversely affect their self-confidence and self-esteem. “The key to a student’s journey is adding various perspectives and thought processes by exposing them to thought leaders and a progressive environment. Keeping this outcome in mind, we were delighted to host Mr. Pankaj Jha to connect with the students and reinforce the importance of believing in their abilities and always following their passion. The session was unfiltered and straight from the heart, leaving the students inspired, determined, and motivated to follow their dreams and soar high in life,” says Mr. Nasir Shaikh, Group CEO, The Lexicon Group of Institutes, MultiFit & EduCrack.

The session was a great opportunity for the students to interact with Mr. Prakash Jha. Students were keen to ask him several questions, but one question which stood out was when a student asked him about his competitor, to which Jha humbly responded that he considered himself to be his biggest competitor and that his goal has always been to be a better version of himself. He left students with a couple of thought-provoking ideas, but above all, he helped them embrace the fact that failure and mistakes are a part of the journey and that one must embrace the challenges it brings and always learn from them and rise above them.

All in all, the session was a huge success. The students felt inspired and motivated in their learning journey, responded enthusiastically, and thoroughly enjoyed their interaction with Mr. Pankaj Jha.

Early Diagnosis to keep Gastric Cancer at bay

By Dr. Ninad Katdare, Senior Surgical Oncologist at HCG Cancer Centre, Mumbai

If you suffer from indigestion and heartburn, beware! It could indicate stomach cancer or gastric cancer. In this case, early diagnosis is the key to a cure. But it often does not get diagnosed until it has spread to the lymph nodes or to the other organs of the body. Also, its traits mimic other illnesses, and hence the moment any unusual change is noticed in the body, it must be shown to a medical specialist.

Gastric cancer, also called stomach cancer, occurs when normally healthy cells get replaced by growing cancer cells within the stomach lining. The stomach is a muscular sac located in the upper part of the abdomen. Cancers in the stomach can develop very rapidly hence it becomes important to look out for early signs to come up with an effective treatment.

Symptoms –

Early signs of gastric cancer include heartburn, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, change in appetite, nausea, feeling bloated after eating, vomiting with or without blood, swelling of the abdomen, discomfort in the abdomen above the navel, abdominal pain, feeling of fullness in upper abdomen below the breast bone after consuming smaller portions of food, unintentional weight loss and decrease in hemoglobin.

These symptoms can resemble some common signs of other gastrointestinal conditions like GERD, gastritis or peptic ulcers as well. Hence if these symptoms persist despite adequate medications, then they need to be comprehensively evaluated at the earliest to rule out stomach cancers. If stomach cancer goes undetected, it can become fatal.

Causes and Risks

Stomach cancer forms when there is a genetic change in the DNA of the stomach cells. Because of this change, the cells grow rapidly and form a tumor that further invades and destroys healthy tissues. With time, it then spreads to other parts of the body.

Factors that increase the likelihood of developing stomach cancer are:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Obesity
  • Gastritis
  • Family history of stomach cancer
  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)
  • Long-term stomach inflammation (gastritis)
  • History of stomach polyps or stomach ulcers
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Diet high in fatty, salty, smoked or pickled foods

Precautions –

The risk of stomach cancer can be prevented by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These include limiting alcohol consumption and the use of tobacco products as it helps reduce the risk for many medical problems. Avoid eating smoked and pickled foods and salted meats and fish. Eating plenty of fiber, fresh fruits, and vegetables with plenty of whole grain foods and vitamin-rich foods can also lower the risk of stomach cancer.

If you witness any symptoms, immediately see a medical practitioner who will help evaluate the symptoms based on complete medical history and physical examination.

Treatment –

Treatment varies depending on the type of cancer, its location, and how far it has advanced in the body. The treatment options include

  1. Radiation is where high-energy X-rays are used to destroy cancer cells with the help of a machine outside the body.
  2. Chemotherapy is done using one or more drugs to destroy the cancer cells by preventing its cell growth or surgery is prescribed.
  3. Surgery can be by open technique or as a minimally invasive procedure where the tumor along with some surrounding healthy tissue is removed to determine the extent of the disease.

Early diagnosis is the key to improving the outlook for stomach cancer. Some risk factors such as family history are not within a person’s control. But the moment there is trouble eating, nausea, dyspepsia, reflux or any symptoms that begin to bother, one must visit a medical specialist. You might want to consider getting a screening test with a doctor’s advice if you believe that you are at risk for developing gastric cancer. The chances of recovery are better if the diagnosis is made at an early stage. This will also help in better treatment outcomes.

USA Fencing Teams Up With RealResponse to Launch 320-ENGARDE — A Texting Hotline for Anonymous Reporting

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., and CHARLOTTE, N.C. — USA Fencing, the national governing body for the Olympic and Paralympic sport of fencing in the United States, has joined forces with the award-winning team at RealResponse to offer 320-ENGARDE, a new texting hotline that allows members of the fencing community to safely report suspected abuse, issues or other potential violations of USA Fencing policies.

By texting 320-ENGARDE (320-364-2733), fencers, coaches, parents and others in the community can submit a report — either anonymously or on the record — about anything concerning that they experience, witness or learn about.

Put simply, this texting hotline will encourage fencers to remain “en garde” both on and off the strip as the fencing community rallies together to recognize and report abuse or other issues of concern.

When a text message is sent to 320-ENGARDE, the contents are confidentially and securely stored in the RealResponse platform. Anonymity is preserved because none of the reporter’s contact information, including their phone number, can be viewed by USA Fencing.

After a message is received, a designated USA Fencing representative can respond via text message to gather additional information — all while allowing the submitter to remain anonymous (if they chose) throughout the process.

The underlying goal behind 320-ENGARDE, says USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews, is to streamline the reporting process by offering an additional tool to members.

“At USA Fencing, we believe that reporting a concern should be as simple as picking up your smartphone,”Andrews says. “Our partnership with RealResponse and the debut of 320-ENGARDE gives members a vital resource that’s easy to use, easy to remember and anonymous.”

David Chadwick, founder and CEO of RealResponse, says his team is “proud to add USA Fencing to the growing number of national governing bodies that RealResponse partners with.”

“The proactive work that Phil and his team have undertaken to ensure the health and well-being of all in the organization is commendable,” he says, “and we look forward to helping them in this very worthwhile and much-needed element of their business.”

While 320-ENGARDE is a powerful tool, it doesn’t replace other reporting options offered through FenceSafe, USA Fencing’s suite of safety resources. Other reporting options remain available, allowing members to share concerns through an online form, email or phone call.

FOGSI Inks MoU with NABH to Collaborate for Improving Quality Standards for Maternal Healthcare in India

FOGSI Inks MoU with NABH to Collaborate for Improving Quality Standards for Maternal Healthcare in India

Bengaluru, August 29, 2022: The Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), India’s professional organization representing practitioners of obstetrics and gynaecology, today, announced its collaboration with the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH)/Quality Council of India (QCI), India’s apex body for accreditation and quality promotion, to advance the Government’s vision to improve the quality of maternity services. This collaboration will ensure ‘One Nation One Standard’ where Maternity service providers (MSP’s) will be jointly assessed by NABH and FOGSI.

This is a crucial quality-improvement sectoral collaboration aimed at reducing maternal mortality in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthening health systems for safer childbirth in India. Under the MoU hospitals and nursing homes having maternal care facilities, clinical standards will be assessed, ensuring consistent, safe, and respectful care for mothers during and after childbirth. This collaboration is envisaged to improve and standardize quality across all MCH facilities in the country, a landmark step in our evolving health system.

Emphasizing the need for quality at the foundational level, Dr. Mahesh Verma, Chairman of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) said, “We are driven to develop a culture of excellence, enhance healthcare systems, and promote continuous quality improvement and patient safety. We are delighted to collaborate with FOGSI to enhance maternal health standards in the country with its flagship initiative, Manyata.”

Dr. Atul Mohan Kochhar, CEO of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) added, “Improving the quality of maternal healthcare in the country is certainly the need of the hour as India has one of the highest numbers of maternal deaths in the world. We strongly believe that it is imperative to lift the quality standards in maternal healthcare to be able to improve our health outcomes overall. This collaboration with FOGSI is a crucial step forward to strengthen the maternal health ecosystem across the country.”

Dr. S. Shantha Kumari, President, FOGSI, and Treasurer, FIGO, said, “Embedding standards for quality of care in health systems hold great potential in reducing maternal mortality and achieving the health-related SDG targets. However, in India, despite the increase in the number of women delivered in facilities, maternal mortality remains alarmingly high, suggesting gaps in quality of care. The current SRS data suggests that India’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has improved to 103 in 2017-19, from 167 in 2011-13, highlighting improvements in our health systems but we still have a lot of ground to cover. With around 50% of women in the country delivering in private maternity hospitals, there is an urgent need for the adoption of clinical standards by the obstetric community. We welcome the collaboration with NABH that will only promise better outcomes and health for women in India.”

Dr. Hrishikesh D. PaiPresident-Elect, FOGSI, and Chief Administrator, FOGSI-Manyata initiative, added, “We are delighted to come together with NABH towards improving the quality of maternity care as well as access to this care with Manyata so that every woman in the country receives quality services wherever and whenever she seeks care. This collaboration is a significant milestone and will strengthen our commitment to providing equitable and high-quality maternal care in India.”

Dr. Hema Divakar, National Convener, FOGSI-Manyata initiative said, “A decade of efforts has shown us that it is worth investing in strengthening maternal health care systems so as to bridge the gap between knowing and doing. Upskilling of existing human resources has made a huge impact on the quality of care in the Manyata accredited centers.”

This collaboration will involve quality care sensitization workshops for Maternity Service Providers (MSPs) aimed at creating a pool of FOGSI specialists to assess facilities for NABH quality accreditation and assessments of MSPs by NABH as per FOGSI’s Manyata standards.

Although the share of India’s institutional deliveries has increased to 88.6% in 2019-2021 (NFHS 5), the country has one of the highest numbers of maternal deaths, globally. A considerable proportion of maternal mortality is in fact due to preventable causes such as obstetric haemorrhage, pregnancy-related infections and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. To address this, the Government of India has increasingly prioritised quality maternal care by instituting quality improvement programmes in public health facilities. However, with a significant proportion of women choosing private care to deliver, the private sector plays a critical role in providing quality maternal care to women. This highlights the need for a national system to oversee the quality of maternity care among private providers and thereby improve maternal health outcomes.

To bridge this gap, FOGSI has been driving Manyata since 2013, a programme that promotes the adoption and practice of 16 clinical standards based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standards of quality care for antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care. The programme evidence by Ariadne Labs (Affiliated to Harvard) shows a 70% increase in Manyata facilities being able to manage life-threatening complications, such as obstructed labour, pre-eclampsia and/or eclampsia, and postpartum haemorrhage greatly improved. Manyata’s footprint spans 22 states across a network of 1500 facilities in the country. It is a first-of-its-kind initiative which is building the capacities of healthcare workforce and providing certification, thereby setting a benchmark for maternal quality care. Manyata has laid the foundation for self-driven awareness and demand in Quality improvement amongst facilities and with this collaboration endeavours to scale together with NABH. The initiative is powering innovation through social health entrepreneurs and institutional business models as part of its sustainability and scale-up strategy. It has the potential to be replicated in nations with similar socio-economic demographic and mixed health systems.

Hence, the sectoral collaboration between NABH and FOGSI can create a paradigm shift in the maternal health ecosystem by complementing each other’s efforts to reach more mothers and create a more significant impact.
