Bhubaneswar, Sept. 1: The Odisha government has directed universities, engineering colleges, ITIs, polytechnics and district skill development authorities to intensify awareness campaigns and encourage greater participation in the Odisha Skills Competition 2026-27, with registrations open until September 15.

In a communication to educational and technical institutions, Skill Development and Technical Education Department Commissioner-cum-Secretary Bhupendra Singh Poonia urged stakeholders to mobilise eligible students and youth to take part in the state-level competition, which features 63 skill categories.

The competition is designed to identify and nurture skilled talent across diverse trades and disciplines, creating a pathway for participants to compete at the national and international levels. Winners from the state competition will qualify for the IndiaSkills Competition, with top performers eventually getting an opportunity to represent India at the WorldSkills Competition 2028.

The department has asked institutions to actively promote the competition through official communication channels and guide students in selecting skill categories that align with their academic qualifications, technical training, interests and competencies.

To strengthen the outreach effort, colleges and training institutes have been advised to involve heads of departments, faculty members and trainers in mentoring prospective participants throughout the registration process.

The government has also instructed every institution to appoint a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) to coordinate awareness drives, student mobilisation and registration support for aspiring contestants.

Along with the advisory, the department has shared the IndiaSkills Competition Guidelines and the Synopsis of Odisha Skills to help institutions understand eligibility criteria and identify suitable categories for participants.

Officials said coordinated efforts across educational and training institutions would help expand participation and showcase Odisha’s skilled youth on national and global platforms.

One of the major inspections was carried out at a shopping mall in the Jayadev Vihar area, where officials examined multiple eateries operating inside the food court. The teams scrutinised the quality of food being prepared and served, along with storage practices and overall hygiene conditions.

According to officials, three inspection teams fanned out across different locations in the city, allowing the department to carry out checks at several establishments simultaneously. The drive focused on identifying lapses in food handling, storage, and safety protocols.

Frozen food products remained a key area of scrutiny during the inspections. Officials examined whether such items were being stored under prescribed conditions and assessed their quality before sale to consumers.

Food Safety Officer Satyajit Patel said the operation marks the second phase of the department’s enforcement campaign targeting fast-food centres in the Jayadev Vihar area.

“Based on the situation, we are conducting the second food safety drive at fast-food centres in Jayadev Vihar. Food safety officials are inspecting the shops, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the raid,” Patel said.

The ongoing inspection campaign comes amid heightened vigilance over food quality and public health. Authorities said action against establishments found violating food safety regulations will be decided after the inspection reports and sample examinations are completed.

The department has been carrying out regular inspections across the city in an effort to ensure that food businesses adhere to prescribed safety standards and consumers are served safe and hygienic food.

The programme, with an outlay of around Rs 1.27 lakh crore, covers everything from chip design and fabrication to packaging, equipment, materials, research and skilled manpower.

The timing is significant. Semiconductors have become the backbone of the modern economy. Almost every major technology product — from smartphones and cars to computers, telecom equipment and artificial intelligence systems — depends on chips.

For India, developing the ability to make more of these critical components at home could reduce supply-chain risks while creating a new engine of industrial growth.

From Designing Chips to Making Them

India already has a strong reputation for semiconductor design and engineering talent. Many global technology companies rely on Indian engineers for chip design and related research.

The launch responds to an emerging concern among dog parents in India.
