Madhubani/Varanasi: Veteran mathematics teacher and educationist Dr Braj Kishore Singh, former Principal of B.Y. Janta High School (Baleshwar Yadav +2 High School), Peharajathan, Khaira, died in Varanasi on January 30, 2026. He was retired and had been living with his sons in the city. His death has drawn tributes from educators and former students across Bihar and other parts of the country.
Dr Singh served the school from December 1980 to July 2014, playing a key role in strengthening academic standards in rural and semi-urban Bihar. Colleagues and students described him as a strict disciplinarian with a compassionate approach to teaching. He was credited with making mathematics accessible to first-generation learners and for promoting values such as integrity, self-respect and perseverance. Many of his former students now hold positions in public service, education, entrepreneurship and civil society in India and overseas.
One of Dr Singh’s noted students is Dr Birbal Jha, known as the “Youngest Living Legend of Mithila.” Dr Birbal Jha is the Founder of British Lingua, an internationally recognized institute for communication skills, and the author of more than 30 books. Educationists said the success of such alumni reflected Dr Singh’s long-term impact on human capital development. Paying tribute, Dr Birbal Jha said,
“He was not just a teacher but a mentor who shaped character. He taught us to think right, speak right and act right.”
Dr Singh was cremated at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi. He is survived by his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, a daughter and grandchildren. A condolence meeting at the school campus in his native village of Khaira Tilai was attended by local representatives, teachers, alumni and members of the school management committee.
Educationists described Dr Singh’s death as a major loss to the tradition of value-based schooling in rural India. His contribution to expanding access to quality education, they said, would be remembered by generations of students.
