Mumbai, Sep 5: Large private sector banks are expanding their gold loan businesses as rising gold prices and growing demand for secured credit create fresh opportunities in India’s lending market.

Gold Loans Gain Momentum as Private Banks Target a Larger Share of the Credit Market

The gold loan segment has grown rapidly in recent years, supported by higher gold prices and increasing demand from households, small businesses and self-employed borrowers. The market has also attracted greater interest from banks looking to expand their retail lending portfolios.

Private banks are increasingly focusing on higher-value gold loans, a segment that has traditionally been dominated by specialised gold finance companies and public sector lenders. Their growing presence is expected to increase competition and give borrowers more formal lending options.

Higher gold prices have increased the value of jewellery used as collateral, allowing eligible borrowers to raise larger amounts against their holdings. Gold loans can also provide relatively quick access to funds without requiring borrowers to sell their gold assets.

For small businesses, gold-backed borrowing can be useful for meeting working-capital requirements, managing cash-flow gaps and funding short-term business needs. For households, the loans can help meet expenses such as education, emergencies or other financial requirements.

The expansion is also important for the banking sector because secured lending allows banks to diversify their retail loan portfolios while reaching customers who may not have easy access to conventional unsecured credit.

The growing competition could encourage lenders to improve their services, expand their branch and digital networks and make the gold-loan process faster and more convenient for customers.

For the wider economy, a larger organised gold-loan market can help bring more borrowers into the formal financial system and improve access to credit for households and small businesses.

With gold prices remaining elevated and demand for secured borrowing continuing to grow, gold loans are emerging as an increasingly important part of India’s retail credit market. The entry of more large private banks is likely to make the segment more competitive and expand its reach across the country.
