India Builds Record Forex Reserves, Strengthening Shield Against Global Shocks

business Sep 7, 2026

New Delhi, Sep 7: India’s foreign exchange reserves have reached a record $740.8 billion, giving the country a stronger financial cushion to deal with global economic uncertainty, currency volatility and external shocks.

According to the latest Reserve Bank of India data, the forex reserves rose by $11.47 billion in the week ended August 28. This was the ninth consecutive weekly increase and pushed the reserves to an all-time high.

The rise was mainly driven by foreign currency assets, which increased by $9.34 billion to $600.67 billion. The value of the RBI’s gold reserves also rose by around $2.19 billion to $116.41 billion during the week.

The strong reserve position is important for the Indian economy. A large forex cushion gives the RBI greater room to manage sharp movements in the rupee and respond to sudden changes in global capital flows.

It also provides support when international oil prices rise. Since India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, a strong dollar reserve can help the country meet higher import payments and reduce pressure on the external sector.

The recent increase in reserves has also been supported by strong foreign-currency inflows following measures introduced by the RBI. Total mobilisation through foreign-currency deposits and overseas borrowing channels has crossed $136 billion, according to recent reports.

For businesses and investors, stronger reserves can improve confidence in India’s ability to withstand global financial disruptions. They also give policymakers greater flexibility to manage periods of volatility without allowing sudden currency movements to put excessive pressure on the economy.

The record level comes at a time when global markets continue to face risks from geopolitical tensions, changing interest-rate expectations and uncertain capital flows. Against this backdrop, the rise in India’s forex reserves strengthens the country’s external financial position.

The latest figures show that India has built a sizeable buffer to face global uncertainty. Maintaining adequate reserves while ensuring stable currency and financial conditions will remain important as the global economic environment continues to change.
