New Delhi, Sep 25: India’s manufacturing sector has expanded significantly over the past 12 years, with electronics, mobile phones, defence equipment, automobiles and medical products emerging as major areas of growth under the Make in India initiative.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the progress made since the launch of Make in India, saying the country is now making more products, attracting more investment and increasing exports.
Make in India was launched on September 25, 2014, with the aim of making India a major global manufacturing, design and innovation hub. The initiative currently covers 27 sectors, including 15 manufacturing sectors and 12 service sectors.
One of the biggest changes has been seen in electronics. Electronics production increased from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26.
Mobile-phone production has grown even faster, rising from around Rs 18,000 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 6.27 lakh crore in 2025-26. India is now the world’s second-largest mobile-phone manufacturer by volume.
Defence manufacturing has also recorded strong growth. Indigenous defence production increased from Rs 46,429 crore in 2014-15 to a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26.
The automobile sector has added to this manufacturing growth. India produced 31.03 million vehicles in 2024-25, around 33 per cent more than in 2014-15.
Pharmaceuticals continue to be another important part of the manufacturing economy. India ranks third globally by pharmaceutical production volume and 11th by value. The industry recorded a turnover of Rs 4,71,898 crore in 2024-25.
Medical-device manufacturing has also grown, with domestic production increasing from Rs 28,000 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 41,500 crore in 2024-25.
The growth across these sectors shows how India’s manufacturing base has gradually become broader. Along with higher production, it has created opportunities for suppliers, component manufacturers, logistics companies and skilled workers.
The next phase of this growth will depend on stronger domestic supply chains, greater use of technology, more value addition and deeper integration with global manufacturing networks.
Earlier in the day, Modi also stressed the importance of building a self-reliant India while interacting with participants of the Seva Yatra travelling from Varanasi to Vadnagar under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.
As Make in India completes 12 years, the rising production numbers underline the growing role of manufacturing in India’s wider economic development.
