IIT Roorkee Celebrates 77th Republic Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Innovation, Resilience, and Inclusive Nation-Building

IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand | Jan 26 — The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) celebrated the 77th Republic Day of India with solemnity and patriotic fervour on its historic campus, reaffirming its commitment to the constitutional ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, and to nation-building through education, research, and innovation.

The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem, in the presence of faculty members, students, officers, staff, and school children, fostering a collective spirit of unity and national pride.

Addressing the Institute community, Prof. K. K. Pant, Director, IIT Roorkee, reflected on India’s journey as the world’s largest democracy and underscored the critical role of higher education institutions in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and self-reliant nation. He emphasised that IIT Roorkee’s legacy of excellence carries a responsibility to translate knowledge into solutions that address real-world challenges.

Highlighting the Institute’s contributions across innovation, intellectual property generation, disaster resilience, inclusive excellence, and community-centric development, particularly in environmentally sensitive and Himalayan regions, Prof. Pant stressed the need to move from reactive responses to science-led, technology-enabled, and anticipatory approaches for national development.

Speaking on the occasion, he said, “A developed India can be built only on resilient and secured foundations. Institutions like IIT Roorkee must ensure that research and innovation lead to resilient infrastructure, empowered communities, and inclusive growth, in alignment with the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.”

The programme also recognised the achievements of students, faculty, and staff across academics, research, innovation, sports, and cultural pursuits, reflecting IIT Roorkee’s holistic approach to education and leadership development.

Cultural performances by school students added vibrancy to the celebrations, reinforcing the values of discipline, unity, and respect for the nation.

The Republic Day celebrations were graced by the presence of Prof. U. P. Singh, Deputy Director, IIT Roorkee, and Shri Prashant Garg, Registrar, IIT Roorkee, along with the Deans, faculty members, officers, staff, and students of the Institute. Their presence lent dignity to the occasion and reflected the collective institutional spirit in commemorating the national event.

The Republic Day celebrations were conducted through coordinated institutional efforts. Prof. Barjeev Tyagi, Dean of Students’ Welfare (DoSW), facilitated student participation, while Prof. Indra Vir Singh, Dean (Administration), along with the General Administration and allied units, ensured smooth logistics, protocol, and arrangements for the event.

The programme concluded with a renewed collective resolve by the IIT Roorkee community to uphold constitutional values and to continue contributing meaningfully to India’s progress through knowledge creation, innovation, and service to society.
