news Jan 29, 2026

A large-scale environmental initiative marked this year’s Khandagiri Mela 2026, as a Used PET Bottle Collection Drive was successfully carried out through a joint effort by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd., and the Odisha Development Management Programme (ODMP). The drive was conducted at the Khandagiri Mela Ground from January 25 to February 7, 2026.

The historic fair, widely known for its cultural, spiritual, and heritage value, draws thousands of visitors and devotees each year. Keeping in view the environmental challenges associated with large gatherings, the organisers introduced a structured system for collecting and recycling used PET bottles to promote sustainable waste management practices.

To ensure smooth on-ground execution, 80 Safai Sathis and supervisors were deployed across the mela premises. The team managed systematic collection, segregation, and regular monitoring of plastic waste generated during the event.

The programme was formally inaugurated by IAS officer Chanchal Rana, Commissioner of BMC, who emphasized the urgent need to curb plastic pollution, encourage responsible public participation, and strengthen recycling systems through authorized recycling partners.

As part of the public awareness outreach, a nukkad natak (street play) was staged at the venue, creatively spreading messages about plastic waste management and environmental responsibility in an engaging and easily understandable format for visitors.
