All you need to know about prostate gland

Changes in urinary pattern after 50’s may be a sign of enlarged prostate

Dr Vipin Sisodia

– Dr Vipin Sisodia, Consultant- Urology, Yatharth Super Specialty Hospital, Greater Noida

Prostate gland is the most talked about organs in men that usually enlarges with aging (especially after 50 years of age) and obstruct the urine flow. There is a dire need to raise awareness about the importance of the effective functioning of this gland, and if someone notices a change in the pattern of the normal passage of urine, it is important to seek urologists’ opinion. A urologist would categorize your symptoms and run some tests like urine exam, ultrasound, uroflowmetry and Prostate-specific Antigen (PSA).

For most of the mild symptoms one may not need any treatment but only lifestyle changes would help. But in case if the symptoms are bothersome, affecting sleep or disturbing daily routine, further group of medications may help in subsiding the symptoms. The first group of medicines helps in relaxing the muscles outlet and the second group of medicine is prescribed to reduce the size of the prostate.

“In some patients’, despite medications the symptoms worsen leading to blood in urine, recurrent Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) or changes in the backpressure in the kidneys, and a prostate surgery remains the only option. The surgery is different from the one done for treating prostate cancer, it is an endoscopic surgery done by passing an endoscope through the urethra, a tube inside the penis and prostate is removed in chips to create a lumen for smooth passage of urine. Energy to cut the prostate may vary from electric current to laser energy, and as the procedure is done under anaesthesia, the patient may require hospitalisation for 2 to 3 days.

The second common problem of the prostate is cancer. 15% of all men have chances to develop prostate cancer with the increasing age (after 80 years of age) irrespective of the genetic condition. In such cases the progression of the disease is slow with high survival rates in comparison to prostate cancer caused due to gene mutation.

Despite the fact that the prevalence of prostate cancer among Indian men is 25 times less than those in the western countries, it is still the 12th leading cause of mortality and morbidity in India.

Prostate cancer being one of the most common types of cancers among males usually grows slowly and during the initial stages remains confined to the glands. In comparison to other cancers that are highly metastatic in nature, prostate cancer is less common under the age of 50 years.

As the stages progress, the condition worsens and may lead to bone fractures, spinal pain, fecal and urinal incontinence and weakness in legs. Those vulnerable need to undergo PSA test to confirm or rule out the possibility of prostate cancer, and if the prostate levels are high, MRI of the prostate followed by prostate biopsy may be done. Once the diagnosis of the prostate cancer is confirmed, then imaging in the form of bone scan or PSMA PET CT is done to check if the disease is localized within the prostate or metastasized to other body parts.

If cancer is localized to the prostate, then surgical treatment is the best option particularly if the patient has symptoms. Radiation and hormone therapy is an alternative to surgery. For surgery, the whole prostate is removed instead of channelling done for non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. The robot is used by the surgeon to facilitate the removal of the prostate and it is not done by the robot as commonly perceived. Surgery may affect men’s sexual power and may cause temporary urine leaks for which they have to wear diapers for 2 weeks to 3 months. 98% of men get better as for as continence is concerned by one year.

Kolkata Thunderbolts cruise to semi-finals

Kolkata Thunderbolts cruise to semi-finals

Kochi, 28th February 2023: Defending Champions Kolkata Thunderbolts confirmed their spot in the semi-finals of the second season of the Prime Volleyball League with a superb 15-12, 15-9, 15-14, 15-13, 10-15 win over Chennai Blitz at the Regional Sports Centre, Kochi on Monday. Vinit Kumar, who plays as Universal, was named the player of the match for his power-packed performance.

Speaking after the match, Kolkata Thunderbolts middle-blocker and Captain Ashwal Rai lauded his team performance. He said, “It’s a nice feeling that we have secured our place in the semi-finals. Our focus is now on the next match. These two points were crucial for us as it gives us boost to everyone in the team.”

“I have played a lot of matches in Kerala. It was nice to play in front of such an amazing crowd. The fans were so passionate and enjoying every minute of the game. It also encourages us also to give our 100%,” he added.

As the match started, Kolkata’s defence was rock solid and put the pressure on Chennai early on with ease. Vinit started making powerful spikes to trouble the Blitz’ defence. Blocker Jose Verdi and hitter Cody Caldwell combined superbly in the middle to block Jobin Varghese spike to give the team a good lead. Janshad kept setting up the balls on the platter for Vinit and the Thunderbolts took control of the game.

As the game progressed, Vinit stood tall and strong to deny Moyo’s spike and ensured Kolkata maintain their lead and pressure on Chennai.

A timely review from Cody helped the defending champions a crucial point. Defensive errors from Chennai Blitz did not help their cause. Abhilash Chaudhary impressed with his performance as he added an extra flair to Kolkata’s attacks.

Janshad and Vinit’s pairing continued to trouble Chennai’s defence, while Abhilash’s block helped the Thunderbolts in tackling Jobin’s attacks. Towards the end of the game, a combination play started by Cody ended Chennai’s resistance and the Thunderbolts picked up an easy win to confirm their spot in the semi-finals.

Indian Government and EdTech Startups Reshaping the Education Landscape with Teacher Upskilling

The Indian EdTech startup culture has been thriving in recent years, with many platforms emerging to cater to the diverse needs of the education sector. These have not just been catering to young students but are also bridging the gap for continuous learning and upskilling by providing the youth and avid learners an excellent platform to enhance their knowledge and leverage that for greater and global work opportunities.

Suraasa is one such platform that is leading the way when it comes to teacher education and empowerment. As one of the few EdTech platforms curated specifically for teacher training, Suraasa has made a significant impact on the Indian education ecosystem.

The brand’s approach to teacher education is research-driven and pedagogically sound, which has helped them to enhance and upskill teachers. This, in turn, has contributed to an improved educational platform for students. With their innovative approach, Suraasa has raised $1.2 million in seed funding from various investors, including NB Ventures in the United Arab Emirates, SuperMorpheus in Singapore, Vinners, and SucSEED Innovation in India.

One of the key initiatives by Suraasa was the launch of the International Teachers’ Olympiad 2022, which aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This initiative received registrations from over 60,000 teachers from 1800 schools (both government and private schools) across 30+ countries. Moreover, their Teacher Training Programme has also been instrumental in helping teachers secure some of the best jobs in the USA, with packages as high as ₹64 lacs per annum. The success of these initiatives demonstrates the importance of upskilling teachers and the potential for EdTech platforms like Suraasa to make a difference.

Even the Indian Government recognizes the importance of upskilling and has been actively pushing for it. It considers upskilling and re-skilling of the youth to be an imperative step in enhancing their skills and employability and promoting economic growth. Hence, The Union Budget 2023 saw a significant allocation of funds to enhance upskilling resources for the youth. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has been allocated ₹3,418.07 crores this year, 20% higher than the previous year. This retaliates that youth empowerment through skilling is one of the priority areas in this year’s budget, which aligns with Suraasa’s mission to enhance teacher education and empowerment.

Speaking about the industry growth and the government’s push towards upskilling, Founder and CEO of Suraasa, Rishabh Khanna shares, “At Suraasa, we believe that empowering Indian teaching talent is key to unlocking the potential in the country. With the growing demand for skilled educators in India and around the world, we are committed to providing innovative and effective teacher education and empowerment programmes. Education is one such field that is welcoming technology and embracing the innovative solutions of the edtech community. Even the government is giving a boost to India’s edtech sector that has grown exponentially over the last three years. We are thrilled to be part of this growing EdTech startup culture. With the government’s support, we’re excited about the potential impact of our upskilling programmes on Indian teaching talent and the technology-driven evolution of the education sector.”

With constant innovation and a drive to mark a global presence, it is encouraging to witness The Indian EdTech startup culture flourish, and platforms like Suraasa, leading the way in transforming the education sector. With their innovative approach to teacher education and upskilling, they have made a significant impact on the quality of education in India and the government’s push for upskilling further emphasizes the importance of initiatives like Suraasa’s and the potential for them to contribute to a brighter future for the youth of India.
