Yulu aims to power half-million green rides & 3 Mn green deliveries monthly by end of 2023 in Mumbai & Navi Mumbai

India, May 01, 2023: Yulu, India’s largest shared 2 wheelers electric mobility player, is doubling-down on its green and shared electric mobility services in Mumbai & Navi Mumbai. With 3500+ vehicles on the road it has already increased its fleet size by 3 times in 2023 and aims to exit the year with 10,000+ vehicles on the road.

Yulu has seen an encouraging response from users in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai with over 150,000+ kms of rides being taken everyday on Yulu. The entire fleet of vehicles in Mumbai & Navi Mumbai comprises Yulu’s New Generation EVs that are purpose-built for people and goods mobility. Yulu DeX, its shared mobility vehicle meant for deliveries, is powering over 30K green deliveries everyday. Yulu Miracle, its shared mobility vehicle for last mile commute sees over 2000 users using it everyday for their needs. Since inception Yulu’s shared EVs have helped save over 2.2 million tonnes of CO2 and helped reduce the pollution levels.

R.K. Misra, Co-Founder, Yulu, said, “Yulu’s vision is to make urban mobility green, affordable and accessible for all. We are very glad to expand our services in Mumbai, a city that is an epitome of speed, efficiency and opportunity. Yulu’s shared mobility services provide a convenient, smart & affordable mobility option not just for daily commuters but also enable citizens with limited resources, like delivery executives, to dream big and strive for a better future. New services like ours can work only when policymakers, governments, city authorities & businesses come together for a common vision. We are enthused by the love given to us by Mumbaikars and involvement of the authorities so far and are confident that with their support especially in creating more Yulu zones and energy infrastructure, we can make shared electric mobility the next big mobility frontier for Navi Mumbai & Mumbai”

The company has operations in Greater Mumbai (Andheri, BKC, Bandra West) and in Navi Mumbai (Vashi, Koparkhairne, Nerul and CBD), providing services in over 200 sq. km. As part of its growth strategy, the company expects to go deeper into existing serviceable areas, as well as expand its services in Central and South Mumbai, and plans to set up Yulu Zones at 200 more prominent locations in the next quarter with the help of local authorities.

The growth in mobility services is complemented by an in-tandem growth of supporting energy infrastructure by Yuma Energy – one of India’s largest AI-powered battery swapping networks – that ensures near-zero down-time of Yulu’s vehicles. With close to 20 Yuma stations already operational, the company plans to triple the touch points in the next 2 quarters.

Yulu works with a “3C” (Citizen-Corporate-City) partnership approach, to build its presence at high commuter foot-fall areas like Metro stations, Corporate Industrial parks, and resident welfare associations (RWAs). Yulu has also forged strong relationships with Government bodies like MCGM, MMRDA, NMMC, CIDCO, Central and Western Railway, Mumbai Electricity Boards, educational institutions like IIT Bombay, and companies like Adani Electricity.

As a responsible corporate citizen, Yulu has undertaken several initiatives to make a meaningful contribution to society. In association with Mumbai Traffic Police Headquarters, Worli, Yulu introduced Mumbai’s first “Safe Rider” Program – a First-ever road safety and traffic awareness program created for delivery partners for their safety and that of others. Yulu also partnered with Majhi Vasundhara (Environment and Climate Change Department, Government of Maharashtra) to promote climate change awareness with an EV rally and encourage a switch towards sustainable mobility solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of the cities as part of World Earth Day, 2023.

Karishma Mehta & the power of storytelling at 100th episode of ‘Mann ki Baat’

Karishma Mehta, Founder & CEO of Humans of Bombay (HOB), India’s biggest storytelling platform, was invited to be a part of a special conclave organised by Prasar Bharti to mark the centenary episode of “Mann ki Baat”. She was part of the session on the theme “Awahan Se Andolan – Building Mass Movement” that also included actor Aamir Khan, endocrinologist and diabetologist, Dr. Shashank R. Joshi, school principal, Deepmala Pandey, and educationist and administrator Prof. Najma Akhtar.

Talking about the event Mehta said, “Sitting at the panel, in the midst of so many stalwarts I realised how much we have grown and how much of a difference we’ve been able to make with our stories. Through Humans of Bombay, we’ve spoken about building a community, women’s rights and the power of storytelling. Saying that on stage with a room full of so many people brought goosebumps and it felt surreal. Being part of the celebrations of the 100th episode of ‘Mann ki Baat’ is a big milestone for us as a team.”

What started as a photoblog, became a movement and is now a powerful community of 4.9+ million people across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn & YouTube. The stories featured on HOB provide a glimpse into the struggles, challenges and achievements of ordinary people from all walks of life. Many of these stories deal with difficult subjects such as domestic violence, homosexuality, sex workers, acid attacks, drug habits, social exclusion, and other taboo topics. By sharing these stories, Mehta aims to break down societal barriers and make conversations about these issues more accessible and relatable to a wider audience.

Doctors at Apollo Hospitals perform challenging 8-hour cardiac surgery to save woman

Ahmedabad, May 1st, 2023: A team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, led by Dr Utpal Shah, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, performed a life-threatening triple valve replacement on a 48-year-old woman. The high-risk surgery involved a redo mitral valve replacement, a redo tricuspid valve replacement, and an aortic valve replacement. Redo valve replacement surgeries are extremely challenging since they often pose a higher risk to the patient’s life during and post-surgery.

The 48-year-old patient first got a mitral valve replacement and tricuspid valve repair surgery done 21 years back. She first consulted doctors at Apollo Hospitals in 2021, with complaints of excessive fatigue, swelling in her legs & face, and ascites. The experts ran certain diagnostic tests which were all indicative of issues in the tricuspid valve and severely dysfunctional prosthetic mitral valve function and moderate aortic valve disease. Based on the patient’s health condition, Dr Shah suggested a redo triple valve replacement.

At first, the patient was hesitant due to the high risk involved in the surgery, but after two years when her condition began to deteriorate, she was convinced and agreed to undergo the surgery. After the patient agreed for the surgery, the doctors again ran a few tests to ascertain her condition and found a blockage in the patient’s aortic valve too. A team led by Dr Utpal Shah, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgeon Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, performed the 8-hour-long triple valve replacement surgery.

Dr Shah, said, “There was 25-35% risk to the patient’s life. Triple valve replacement surgery is an extremely rare and complex medical procedure. It is even more challenging in cases when metal valves need to be re-replaced. As per medical literature very few such surgeries are performed internationally.”

Following the surgery, the patient is currently recuperating and responding well to all the post-operative treatments at the hospital.

Bisphosphonate therapy can successfully treat osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Bisphosphonate therapy can successfully treat osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala Director – Professional Services, Head – Orthopaedics & Traumatology, P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai

During the Post-COVID, osteonecrosis appears to be more aggressive, with COVID-19 itself contributing to its etio-pathogenesis in addition to corticosteroids. The possibility of AVN of the femoral head can be conclusively established by a MRI scan in symptomatic patients, and successfully treated with bisphosphonates, if detected in its early stages.

With around 3 decades of excellence in treating Avascular Necrosis (AVN), the treatment modalities have undergone revolutionizing results and those cases which otherwise would require surgical interventions have now become medically curable.

So far speculation and conjecture exist that AVN (Avascular necrosis – osteonecrosis) was a possible outcome in COVID survivors. COVID survivors, who have been on steroids, and then develop hip or thigh pain – need confirmatory MRI to establish a diagnosis of AVN (osteonecrosis) of the femoral head.

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head are successfully treatable with Dr Agarwala ‘s well researched bisphophonate therapy, which is different from osteoporosis management. Recent publications in international peer reviewed journals have established the validity of his long-standing research results. This is a Made in India, for the World Treatment, strategy.

If they are started on early bisphosphonate therapy, which has been written up by Agarwala et al in multiple peer reviewed international publications over 20 years, these patients have amazing early resolution of symptoms and reversal of the disease.

Corticosteroids are lifesaving in the management of COVID 19, and patients who had COVID infection are much more susceptible to AVN development either at lower threshold dose of steroid, or earlier onset of presentation. Hence, on early suspicion, on complaints of hip and thigh pain, diagnosis can be established by early MRI of the femoral head. Patients with early AVN (Ficat-Arlet Stage I and II), can be successfully treated with Bisphosphonate therapy. Symptoms recede and the condition reverses. MRI evidence confirming this reversal is conclusively presented in the publication accepted by the BMJ.

The study conducted by us suggested the development of Osteonecrosis around 58 days later post recovery. While all the patients were experiencing pain in the hip and thighs, medications were provided to them in a series and at the last follow-up, none of them complained about the pain and required surgery. Out of the total 88 patients, 84 of them showed good clinical outcomes at a follow up in 10 months, while only 4 of them required surgical intervention.

Early detection can lead to favourable outcomes for the patients suffering from these conditions. We encourage people who experience pain in the hip or thigh post covid recovery to opt for MRIs as early as possible in order to diagnose AVN.

Dr Sanjay Agarwala, has revolutionized the treatment modality for such cases with his latest findings. While most of the patients were being recommended for surgical procedure, Dr Agarwala has been successfully treating it with bisphosphonates.
