CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics

By – Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, CRISIL

Dharmakirti Joshi, Chief Economist, CRISIL Ltd.

The slowdown in GDP growth in the first quarter was a foregone conclusion due to signs of weak urban consumption, tepid corporate results and a slowdown in government spending. National Statistical Office (NSO) estimates the GDP growth at 6.7% against our expectation of 6.8%.

Although overall private consumption shows mixed trends in the first quarter, initial signs of pick up in rural consumption are visible. We expect private consumption demand to improve this year over an anemic growth of 4% in fiscal 2024.

The low-base effect apart, improvement in agricultural growth and lower food inflation will augur well for private consumption, particularly in rural areas. Higher agricultural growth will augment income and lower food inflation will improve discretionary spending ability.

In addition, government spending on employment and asset generating schemes (PM Awaas Yojna for urban and rural areas) can provide additional support to consumption growth in rest of the fiscal.

That said, unlike last fiscal, rural consumption is expected to outpace urban, as higher interest rates impact urban areas more. The signs of this are visible in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) consumer confidence survey released in August.

India’s Q1 GDP Highlights

By –  Ms. Ritu Prakash Singh, Senior Economist and Head – MSME Research, UGRO Capital

India’s GDP growth for the quarter ending June 2024 registered at 6.7%, slightly below expectations and 1.5 percentage points lower than the same quarter last year. This slowdown is largely due to a high base effect, adverse weather conditions, and restrictions on government activities related to the Lok Sabha election. However, the underlying data remains optimistic, with significant gains in private consumption and service sector. Looking ahead, the measures introduced in the Union Budget FY25 for the MSMEs, manufacturing, and services sectors are expected to provide a substantial boost to these areas.

Learning knows no age, distance or limits in digital era: Dr Birbal Jha

Marking the World Distance Learning Day

31st August 2024, New Delhi: Distance education, now termed as or taken over by ‘online education’ or ‘digital education’, has truly revolutionised the way we connect with, interact with, and learn with educators, peers, or others, bringing resources or institutions to our doorsteps unprecedently, unpredictably, and impactfully.

It has caused remarkable changes in our society, altering the landscape of education and making it available to anyone, regardless of where they are in the world. People around the world can now connect in previously inconceivable ways. Indeed, the concept of distance as a barrier has been eliminated. This remarkable form of instruction has resulted in the “death of distance.”

There was a time when distance education was synonymous with correspondence courses. Students had to rely on post offices, writing postcards, and waiting for weeks, if not months, for their educational materials. The very idea of this seems almost archaic now. Post offices have given way to pixels; postcards have been replaced by emails, and postal services by instant communication.

In the past, individuals from rural areas had to migrate to urban to receive higher education. Today, that is no longer necessary. From the comfort of their villages, students can access the websites of prestigious institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of Pennsylvania. British Lingua has also embraced this change, taking the initiative to impart online education, connecting people from every corner of the globe.

Years ago, if someone wished to learn English, they often had to travel long distances, sometimes across countries. Today, people residing in the Middle East and other distant regions can connect with British Lingua to receive top-notch Spoken English training. What was once a daunting task—getting training from a high-profile teacher whose native language is English—is now easily achievable, even for someone living in a remote village. Online education has made this possible.

Not only is online education more accessible, but it is also cost-effective and democratic. High-quality education is no longer a privilege of the few but a right available to all. World Distance Learning Day holds profound significance in this context, as it highlights the convenience and flexibility that this mode of education offers.

Education is now at the doorstep of every person willing to learn, thanks to the advent of online education. It offers personalized and individualized learning experiences, something that was once a distant dream. In the past, tuition teachers could not reach every student individually, but now, education reaches everyone, regardless of their location.

The advent of Artificial Intelligence has further enhanced this learning experience. With just a single click, students can access a wealth of knowledge. Pronunciation, once a challenging aspect of language learning, is now easily mastered with the help of technology available on every smartphone. Picking up foreign accents, once an onerous task, has become accessible, thanks to online education.

In a nutshell, this mode of education has transformed the way we learn. It offers personalized training and fosters a collaborative learning environment. We must appreciate the science and technology that has made the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family—a reality. The entire world is indeed a global village now.

We are fortunate to be born in an era where technology has brought education to our fingertips. We are reaping the harvest of these advancements, and today, on World Distance Learning Day, we celebrate not just the technology but the limitless opportunities it has created for us all.

Let us continue to embrace and celebrate this new era of learning.

International Women in Cyber Day Commentary

By – Ms. Mandy Andress, Chief Information Security Officer at Elastic

Mandy Andress_Elastic

In the face of a rising tide of new threats and tactics, the industry needs different perspectives for a varied, yet nuanced approach to cybersecurity. Malicious actors work tirelessly to explore new tactics, find new vulnerabilities, and identify novel ways to bypass controls. A more diverse IT security team is better equipped to adopt the resourcefulness and the spontaneity of the ‘hacker mindset’ needed to counter these attacks.

To mark International Women in Cyber Day, I’d like to suggest that our industry takes two crucial steps to include more women in our teams.

To encourage more diverse candidates and women to join cybersecurity roles, we need to broaden the scope of the qualifications we seek in candidates. Looking beyond traditional schooling and career paths, we must consider other skills and personality traits that might enhance the way we protect IT systems.

Second, we need to work harder to encourage more women to join us. That might mean reviewing how and where we advertise roles so that news of open positions reaches more women.

In a multidisciplinary field like cybersecurity (or data science, for that matter), the routine exclusion of female viewpoints isn’t just a barrier to good work – it’s a vulnerability. And in my view, from my day-to-day experience as a CISO, a more diverse cybersecurity team is definitely a better cybersecurity team.

10 Years, 1 Million Screened: Medanta’s ‘Mission TB-Free’ Revolutionizes Tuberculosis Care

New Delhi, 30th August 2024: Medanta, one of India’s leading multi-super speciality hospitals, proudly announced the completion of 10 years of its ‘Mission TB Free’ initiative, a pioneering public health campaign that has revolutionised tuberculosis (TB) detection and treatment across Haryana and beyond. The event celebrating this milestone was graced by Smt Anupriya Patel, Hon’ble Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India, Dr Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director, Medanta (Global Health Limited), Mr. Pankaj Sahni, Group CEO, Medanta (Global Health Limited), and Deputy Director General – Tuberculosis, Central TB Division, and Director General of Health Services, Haryana State.

TB Free Haryana 2

Over the past decade, under ‘Mission TB Free’, Medanta has screened 10 lakh people for tuberculosis, carried out 80,000 chest X-rays and diagnosed over 10,000 cases of TB in Haryana and the bordering states of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The programme has substantially improved TB care by increasing case detection rate, especially in remote areas where access to medical facilities is limited.

New Initiatives:

Furthering its initiative, Medanta announced the launch of motorbike-compatible ultraportable X-Ray machines and mobile vans, enhancing the programme’s ability to reach more underserved communities. Medanta, in partnership with public and private sector entities, also introduced the Arogya Karmee project to strengthen awareness, early diagnosis and treatment of TB, co-morbidities such as lung disease, and non-communicable diseases, among industrial workers. The project aims to establish linkages with service providers like National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) and Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) to ensure access to free treatment for TB, diabetes, hypertension, and lung diseases, as well as preventive measures like diet control and tobacco cessation. It will also focus on providing workplace support for improved treatment adherence. Medanta also plans to expand its highly successful Active Case Finding (ACF) model for strengthening door-to-door screening in Uttar Pradesh. The integration of advanced technologies, including AI-assisted diagnostics, and ultra-portable X-ray devices that can be carried on motorbikes, will be continued to make screening more accessible and reliable.

Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director, Medanta, said, “As we mark a decade of ‘Mission TB-Free’, we remain steadfast in our commitment to achieving India’s national TB objectives. Our mission reflects the country’s ambitious target to eliminate TB. Our growth from a single mobile unit in 2014 to five units in 2023, supported by generous donations and strategic partnerships, exemplifies our commitment to scaling up these vital interventions to improve public health. Our focus on enhancing access to improved diagnostic methodologies and advanced treatments by leveraging cutting-edge technologies underscores our dedication to a patient-first approach. I extend my gratitude to Team Medanta, the ASHA workers, paramedics, and partners for their steadfast work. Together, we continue to strive toward a TB-free India, with a vision to expand our successful model to other high-burden areas across the country.”

Expansion of Mission TB-Free Haryana from Rewari to Other Geographies:

‘Mission TB-Free’ was launched through a pilot project in Rewari, deploying a mobile medical unit equipped with digital X-ray technology. This significantly improved TB diagnosis, detecting 34.4% of smear-negative TB cases that might have otherwise been missed. This effort was part of a broader Call to Action for a TB-Free India, supported by national leaders and organisations like the Central TB Division, USAID, and The Union, which was later expanded state-wide.

To further this effort in other parts of Haryana, Medanta introduced AI-powered digital X-ray systems for rapid imaging and GeneXpert Edge (CBNAAT) for point-of-care molecular diagnosis, reducing diagnosis time to 2 hours, and improving case positivity from 4% to 55%. The programme employed community-based Active Case Finding (ACF) methods which tripled case detection rates compared to previous years. For instance, the first ACF round in Karnal screened 596 people—five times more than standard methods—resulting in detection of 108 active TB cases (18%). AI algorithms like Qure.AI improved the speed and accuracy of detection by assisting in X-ray image interpretation and optimising technician efficiency. Additionally, Medanta used electronic data collection with tablets and e-questionnaires to expand diagnostic reach across Haryana’s 22 districts, as well as in New Delhi and Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. This comprehensive approach significantly enhanced early detection and treatment initiation, with the Rewari strategy alone screening five times more people and detecting 18% active TB cases. These efforts to help deliver crucial healthcare services directly to underserved and rural communities with limited access to medical facilities were supported by Medanta’s partners, including RITES, Krishna Maruti, and RJ Corp, among others.

Dr. Bornali Datta, Director of the TB Programme at Medanta, stated, “Our project ‘Mission TB Free’ has significantly advanced TB detection and treatment in the pilot state Haryana. We have seen substantial progress with increased detection rates in high-risk groups such as farmers, labou¬¬rers, and smokers. However, challenges such as managing mobile unit logistics, occasional diagnostic shortages, and overcoming community stigma persist. To address these issues, we are enhancing community engagement through targeted awareness programmes and exploring innovative diagnostic methods such as tongue swab tests. Our goal remains development of a sustainable, replicable model for TB elimination that can be implemented in other high-burden regions across India.”

Case Study: Project Yamuna Pushtha

The National Capital Region of Delhi has one of the highest concentrations of TB cases globally, with a rate of 735 per 100,000 population. However, in the Yamuna Pushtha area, this rate is nearly 10 times higher. The Case Positivity Rate in Yamuna Pushtha stands at 5-6%, compared to 0.7% in Delhi and 199 per 100,000 in India.

Medanta has been running a bi-weekly screening since 2019 in Yamuna Pushtha, an area with a transient population of 7,000 to 10,000 people, predominantly migrant labourers with irregular incomes. Over the years, the screening findings revealed that a large percentage of the population was already at an advanced stage of tuberculosis. Medanta’s CSR initiative focuses on early detection and diagnosis to reduce mortality and prevent the spread of TB, given that each infected individual can potentially transmit the disease to 10-12 others.

As India records a 16% decline in new TB cases and an 18% reduction in mortality since 2015—the year the country reported the highest number of TB cases in the world—addressing TB in high-prevalence areas like Yamuna Pushtha is crucial to achieving the 2025 TB elimination target.
