Markets Slide for Third Straight Session; Sensex Falls 872 Points, Nifty Below 24,700

By Mr. Vikram Kasat, Head – Advisory, PL Capital.

“Equity markets remained under pressure for a third straight session on Tuesday, with benchmark indices ending over 1% lower after a volatile start. The Sensex dropped 872 points to close at 81,186, while the Nifty slipped 261 points to settle at 24,683. Profit booking in heavyweights, weak cues from institutional flows, and caution ahead of key earnings contributed to the slide. Both FIIs and DIIs were net sellers, with foreign investors offloading ₹526 crore worth of shares.

 Key highlights:

• Broader market action was mixed with 1,455 stocks advancing and 2,517 declining on the BSE.

• Over 80 stocks touched 52-week highs, while 192 hit lower circuits.

• IT stocks saw renewed interest, though large caps, especially those facing index exclusion risks, dragged indices lower.

 Bottom line:

Despite a bright global backdrop and select stock-specific action, domestic benchmarks struggled under selling pressure, signalling near-term caution and consolidation.”

Youth Empowerment: Apprenticeship Scheme Launched in Mizoram

Empowering Youth, Enabling Growth: North East Apprenticeship Pilot Scheme Launched by Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram Shri Lalduhoma and Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Jayant Chaudhary

Mumbai, 20th May 2025 — Reaffirming the Government of India’s commitment to inclusive growth and regional empowerment, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), today launched a strategic pilot scheme to promote apprenticeship training in the North Eastern Region (NER). The scheme was jointly launched in Aizawl by Shri Lalduhoma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram and Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Anchored in the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Ashta Lakshmi and Viksit Bharat, Viksit North East, the initiative aims to provide structured, paid, and high-quality apprenticeship opportunities to youth across the region.

As a key financial support measure, over 26,000 youth from the region will receive an additional ₹1,500 per month for one year under the pilot—over and above the regular stipend provided through the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS). This support is applicable for apprentices from the North East Region undertaking training both within and outside the North East, ensuring that mobility does not become a barrier to accessing opportunity. A total of ₹43.94 crore has been earmarked for the pilot, including ₹4 crore for outreach, capacity building, and project implementation.

Speaking at the launch, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister (I/C), MSDE, stated: “The launch of this special pilot initiative under NAPS marks a defining moment for apprenticeship promotion in the North East. It opens the doors of real industry exposure for our youth—allowing them to step onto the factory floor, understand the dynamics of contemporary industry, and align their skills with real-world demand. For the industry, it offers a transparent mechanism to engage with and evaluate talent early. This is not just a training pathway—it is an accessible, open bridge to employment.

I want to highlight a particularly powerful dimension: the central role of women in this journey. The North East, with its unique cultural ethos, has always stood tall in championing women-led empowerment. At the policy level too, we are committed to reinforcing this. The data emerging from the NAPS implementation in the region clearly reflects higher female participation—turning the North East into a beacon of hope for gender-responsive skilling across India”

Shri Lalduhoma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Mizoram, expressed: “This collaboration with the Government of India will open new doors for the youth of Mizoram and the wider North East. With financial support, quality training, and strong industry linkages, this initiative empowers our young citizens to find their rightful place in India’s evolving economic landscape—whether here in the North East or across the country. Your presence, Hon’ble Minister, is a strong encouragement to our youth and our government to promote practical, flexible, and employment-oriented skills that equip our people to succeed with strength and dignity. Mizoram has a unique demographic advantage—our high literacy rates, combined with the right skilling interventions, can unlock tremendous potential. Our youth are eager to learn and willing to lead. We take pride in our heritage skills, many of which have been passed down through generations, and are now being aligned with modern professional standards. In WorldSkills 2022, our youth made us proud by participating on the global stage. With MSDE’s continued support—including programmes in correctional facilities and those focused on women—we are ensuring inclusivity and aspiration for all. The state has developed a comprehensive Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Plan to ensure a steady pipeline of capable, confident, and employable youth. Together, we are building a stronger and more empowered Mizoram.”

The implementation will be implemented by the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati, and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), supported by State Skill Missions, Regional Directorates (RDSDEs), and local institutions.

This pilot builds upon India’s broader apprenticeship success. Since 2016, NAPS has facilitated more than 42 lakh apprenticeship engagements across the country. The introduction of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) has enabled transparent and timely disbursal of over ₹870 crore directly into apprentices’ accounts since 2022. Over 35,000 establishments have participated in apprenticeship engagement, supported by more than 5,000 Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Melas (PMNAMs) held nationwide.

The North East Apprenticeship Pilot represents a scalable model for high-impact, region-specific skilling interventions—rooted in local needs, aligned with industry demand, and powered by inter-state mobility.

As part of the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also exchanged between the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Welspun Living Limited to operationalise a high-impact pilot for apprenticeship-linked skilling in the textile sector. The objective of the partnership is to build a future-ready workforce for operator roles, with a focus on inclusive participation—ensuring that at least 50% of the trained candidates are women. Under the pilot, 1,000 youth will be trained over the next year through a blended training model comprising 120 hours of classroom instruction and 210 hours of on-the-job training (OJT) at Welspun’s state-of-the-art facilities in Anjar and Vapi, Gujarat. Welspun will lead curriculum design, training delivery, and guaranteed captive placement for successful candidates, while NSDC will support mobilization, pre-screening, digital onboarding via the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH), and funding of classroom training. Upon completion, candidates will receive joint certification from NSDC and Welspun, significantly enhancing their employability.

The event also featured a detailed presentation on the recently approved National Scheme for ITI Upgradation, which has a total outlay of ₹60,000 crore and aims to modernise 1,000 government ITIs across the country through a hub-and-spoke model. The session highlighted how the North Eastern Region can strategically benefit from this transformative scheme by upgrading existing ITI infrastructure, aligning training with emerging industry requirements, and fostering state–industry partnerships.

The event was graced by the presence of several senior dignitaries, including Shri Lalnghinglova Hmar, Minister of State, Labour, Employment and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Shri K. Sapdanga, Hon’ble Minister for Home from Govt of Mizoram. Also present was Shri Maotoshi Longkumer, Adviser for Skill Development, Employment, Labour, and Excise, Government of Nagaland, Smt. G. Madhumita Das, Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, and Shri Shreeshail Malge, Joint Secretary, MSDE.

As India accelerates toward becoming a $5 trillion economy, the Government remains steadfast in its mission to create a future-ready, globally competitive workforce. Through this initiative, the North East emerges not only as a participant but as a leader in India’s skills transformation journey.

The Best Time for Investment in Medium Long and Long Duration Funds

May 20, 2025: Medium long and longer duration funds are special types of debt funds that are marked by the duration of an investment. While a medium duration fund involves investment for a period of 3 to 4 years, a long-term mutual fund attracts investment for 7 years or more. With careful selection of both types of duration-based funds, investors can improve the overall wealth generated for the period of investment. With a close look at the interest rate movement and the current economic situation of the country, investors can make the right fund selection decision accordingly. But first, let us understand how the duration of a fund affects the overall returns that an investor can generate:

The time period or duration of a debt fund is closely related to the total returns it can help an investor generate. Longer the investment horizon, higher is the probability of volatility in the fund due to interest-rate fluctuations and other changes. For example, with a decrease in the interest rate, the total yield from the investments in long-term funds may increase exponentially.

  Medium duration

Investment in Medium Long Duration Funds

The best medium long duration funds can offer protection from market risk and deliver returns.

The following points can help explain the best time for investment in medium long duration funds:

Stability

If the interest rates tend to remain stable for a period of three or more years, the investors must select medium long duration funds. With low market volatility and less chances of changes in the interest rates, probability of capital appreciation in medium duration funds can increase as well.

Low investment horizon

Investors looking for funds with a short investment horizon ranging between 3 to 5 years and must opt for medium long duration funds due to their liquidity.

Portfolio diversification

Investors looking for a way to diversify their portfolio can opt for medium duration funds to generate wealth and receive stability in the short term.

LOng duration fund

Investment in Long Duration Funds

The  best long duration funds can help investors generate exponential wealth. However, complete precaution is essential when selecting long duration funds due to their volatility. The following points can help explain the best time for the selection of long-duration funds.

– Probability of a decrease in interest rates

If investors believe that interest rates are at their peak and can decrease after a certain period then they can select long duration funds for investment. With a decrease in the interest rates, investors can witness significant capital appreciation in long-term funds.

– Long-term investment horizon

Investors looking to park their funds and savings for the long term must opt for long-duration funds with an investment horizon of more than seven years.

Medium and Long duration

Conclusion

Long duration funds can offer an opportunity to generate exponential returns and receive capital appreciation. On the other hand, medium-long duration funds offer protection from market volatility and other changes. With careful selection and understanding of personal financial goals and risk appetite, investors can select the best funds that match their requirements. Careful analysis of the current financial and economic situation and interest rate cycle can help investors in the selection of the right duration-based fund for investment.

bulking

5 Sustainable Bulking Tips for Beginners

May 20, 2025: If you are underweight or want to bulk up anyway, you should go for lean bulking. It doesn’t mean you eat anything that comes your way, be it healthy or unhealthy. Mindless eating might help you gain weight temporarily but may not give you results in the long term.

For long-term bulking, you should rely on weight gainer foods, mindful eating, regular exercise, and more, which we will discuss in this blog.

What Should You Do to Gain Healthy Weight?

If you have been trying for a long time to gain weight but couldn’t find the right way, we have come up with some effective tips here:

1. Eat More than You Eat Already

Whatever number of calories you take currently, you need to eat more to gain weight. Here, the catch is you don’t just need to increase your calorie intake; you need to keep unnecessary fat away. Start by increasing your diet by 200-500 calories a day. If you gain 0.25-0.5 kg a week, it’s a good sign.

2. No to Junk and Yes to Whole Foods

Bulking is not an opportunity to eat junk every day. For healthy weight gain and building muscles, you must fuel your body correctly. It should include amino acids protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats. Add foods like oats, rice, eggs, potatoes, fish, fruits, vegetables, and more. It is important that you get 80-90% nutritious foods.

3. Plan Your Meals for Frequent Eating

When you are bulking, you need to eat more frequently. Your meals must stretch from 3 to 5 or 6 meals a day. With this, you can spread your nutritional intake without declining your metabolism.

4. Go for Your Daily Workouts

Your bulking efforts may go in vain unless your strength train. Start working out every day and increase weights for lifting progressively or increase the number of reps or intensity of the workout. Make sure that compound movements are in your routine. It can include deadlifts, squats, bench presses, or rows.

5. Be Consistent and Wait for the Results

Bulking the right way takes time but sticks with you in the long run. If you are a beginner, set realistic goals and don’t lose hope if you don’t see immediately.
results. Be it your diet or training, be very dedicated consistently.

Summing Up

Weight gain shouldn’t be hectic. It should be done in simple ways, like focusing on clean nutrition, consistent training, and gradual progress. This way, you can build muscles in a healthy and efficient way, which is easier to maintain long-term.

The fitness journey should be to your individual self and shouldn’t compare with others. It can take some time, but it will be worth your efforts.

With the exponential growth of coffee culture in India, cafés are not only focused on brewing better beverages but also creating safer and more efficient work environments for their staff. • FIFO-Ready Layout: Stock rotation is effortless with an angled base, gravity feed matting, and adjustable guides, ensuring the oldest stock is always at the front.
  • Compact Footprint: Designed to fit under or beside counters, without compromising capacity or ease of access.
  • Temperature Precision: Built-in refrigeration maintains optimal temperature throughout the day. Maintains milk at an ideal average core product temperature of +2°C to +4°C (Climate Class 4) for over two and a half hours with the flap open, perfect for busy hours
  • Energy Efficient: Consumes only 0.04 kWh per hour (average for Climate Class 4 conditions), fitted with eco-friendly refrigerant R290, and optimised with EC fans and automated refrigeration cycles.

Government Considers Reinstating Standardised Packaging Norms for Edible Oils

New Delhi, May 20th, 2025: The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), the apex body representing India’s edible oil refining industry, along with other edible oil industry associations, industry bodies, consumer forums, food processing associations and legal metrology controllers of all states and UTs met the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India on the reinstating of standardised pack sizes for edible oils over a virtual call.

The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2021, mandated the declaration of the Unit Sale Price (USP). Subsequently through an amendment, The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2022 omitted Schedule II which mandated commodities to be packed in specific quantities, thus allowing the market to be proliferated with non-standardized packaging. The intended benefit was to allow producers to pack as they deem it fit and it was expected that soon the markets will settle down and consumer awareness of unit selling price will take care of the non-standard pack offerings.

All stakeholders from edible oil sector were of the view that the re-introduction of Schedule II will be an important step to ensure transparency, restore normalcy in the market, and protect consumer interest.

The Government, the association said, has assured the stakeholders that it will look into the issue that has led to confusion and misleading value perception for the consumers. All the concerned stakeholders have been asked to submit final recommendations in this regard.

Standardised packaging ensures that price comparisons are simple, transparent, and fair. It creates a level playing field for both consumers and producers, encouraging trust and long-term brand value.

It may be recalled that in its recommendation to the Ministry last month, IVPA had urged that reinstating standard pack sizes (A range like 5kg, 2kg, 1 kg, 500 grams, 200 grams or any other lower size packs) will be a constructive step toward strengthening the consumer ecosystem while aligning with the Government’s broader goals of transparency, fair trade practices and consumer empowerment.
