Chennai, 24 October 2026: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) registered a convincing 5-1 win over Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN) in a Pool B match on Day 2 of the 97th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament in Chennai on Friday.
BPCL made a blistering start, with Devindar Walmiki converting a penalty corner in the 4th minute and Mandeep Singh adding a field goal a minute later to make it 2-0. Subhan Abid extended the lead with a field goal in the 24th minute, and BPCL went into the final quarter with a 3-0 advantage.
HUTN pulled one back through a field goal in the 49th minute by Muthukumar K, but BPCL responded quickly. Charanjeet Singh scored a field goal in the 54th minute, and Mandeep Singh completed his brace with another field goal in the 57th minute to seal the 5-1 win.
In the second match of the day, Indian Railways (RSPB) registered a narrow 2-1 win over Indian Army (INA) in a closely contested Pool A encounter.
RSPB took the lead through a penalty corner by Lovepreet Singh in the 12th minute. Indian Army drew level in the 28th minute when Ankush scored a field goal, and the teams went into the final quarter locked at 1-1. With the match heading towards a draw, Yogember Rawat converted a penalty corner in the 57th minute to snatch the win for RSPB.
In the third match of the day, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) came back from 1-4 down to play out a pulsating 4-4 draw against Punjab National Bank (PNB) in a Pool A encounter.
IOCL opened the scoring through a penalty corner by Gurjinder Singh in the 19th minute, but PNB hit back almost immediately, with Gursimran Singh equalising from a penalty corner in the 21st minute. PNB then struck twice in quick succession. Thounaojam Ingalemba Luwang scored a field goal in the 24th minute and Sanjay added a penalty corner in the 27th, giving PNB a 3-1 lead at half-time. Abhimanyu stretched the advantage to 4-1 with a field goal in the 33rd minute. IOCL mounted a strong fightback in the third quarter. Gazee Khan scored a field goal in the 37th minute, and Gurjinder Singh completed his brace with a penalty corner a minute later to make it 3-4 going into the final quarter. With PNB looking to hold on, Sunil Yadav converted a penalty stroke in the 57th minute to level the score at 4-4 and earn IOCL a share of the points.
