Chennai, 27 October 2026: Indian Army registered a convincing 6-2 win over Punjab National Bank (PNB) in a high-scoring match on Day 5 of the 97th All-India MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey Tournament in Chennai on Monday.
Indian Army made a flying start, with Dhariyashil Jadhav scoring a field goal in the 15th minute and Ankush doubling the lead with another field goal in the 21st minute. Cyril Lugun converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute to make it 3-0 at the half-way mark. PNB pulled one back when Naveen Antil converted a penalty corner in the 35th minute, making it 3-1.
Indian Army regained control in the third quarter, with Rohit Irengbam scoring a field goal in the 40th minute and Ritendra adding another a minute later to make it 5-1. Cyril Lugun converted his second penalty corner in the 48th minute for Indian Army’s sixth goal, and Abhimanyu scored a field goal for PNB in the 50th minute to make the final score 6-2.
In the second match of the day, Indian Railways (RSPB) edged past Hockey Karnataka 1-0. It was a tightly contested match, with both defences holding firm and the scores remaining level at 0-0 through the first three quarters. The breakthrough finally came in the 59th minute, when Simranjot Singh converted a penalty corner to give Indian Railways a narrow 1-0 win.
In the third match of the day, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) registered a narrow 1-0 win over the Malaysia Hockey Confederation Juniors. BPCL got the all-important goal early, with Sudeep Chirmako scoring a field goal in the 3rd minute. The Malaysian Juniors fought hard to find an equalizer, but BPCL’s defense held firm through the remaining three quarters to seal the 1-0 win.
