New Delhi, Sept. 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India’s per capita carbon emissions are less than half of the global average, asserting that the country continues to present this position at international climate forums while advocating greater global cooperation on environmental challenges.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while inaugurating the two-day international conference, “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics,” organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi. He also launched the NGT Mobile App during the event.
Addressing delegates, Modi said India has long drawn upon its cultural traditions to promote environmental stewardship and is combining those values with modern solutions to tackle climate change.
Conference Brings Together Global Judicial Experts
The conference has brought together judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries to deliberate on issues related to environmental governance, policy implementation, enforcement mechanisms and institutional cooperation.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening legal and judicial approaches to addressing climate and environmental challenges.
PM Highlights India’s Climate Position
During his address, Modi said responsibility for global carbon emissions should be viewed in the context of historical emissions, adding that developed countries have significantly higher per capita emissions than India.
According to the Prime Minister, developed nations emit around six times more carbon per person than India, and the country continues to highlight this distinction in international climate discussions.
India’s Broader Climate Approach
Modi also referred to India’s efforts to combine traditional environmental values with contemporary climate initiatives, including the country’s engagement at international platforms such as the COP21 climate conference in Paris.
He said India aims to contribute to global environmental protection through collaborative action while continuing to advance sustainable development initiatives at home.
The conference will continue over the next two days with sessions examining emerging environmental challenges and the role of judicial institutions in strengthening climate governance.
