Veteran Central Banker Suman Ray Gets New Role as RBI Executive Director

news Sep 1, 2026

Mumbai, Sep 1: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Suman Ray as Executive Director, effective September 1, 2026, bringing a veteran central banker into a key leadership role at the country’s banking regulator.

Ray has spent more than 30 years with the RBI and was most recently serving as Regional Director for Maharashtra. Over the years, he has worked across several areas, including currency management, financial inclusion, payment and settlement systems, consumer protection and human resources.

He has also served as Secretary to the Western Area Local Board, one of the RBI’s four regional advisory boards that provide inputs to the central board on matters concerning their respective regions.

In his new position, Ray will oversee the Department of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and the Premises Department, the RBI said.

His new responsibilities include an area that directly affects public confidence in banks. Through the DICGC, eligible bank deposits receive insurance protection, providing an important safety net for depositors.

Ray’s wide experience within the central bank comes at a time when India’s financial system is changing rapidly. The growth of digital payments, wider access to banking services and increasing focus on consumer protection have made the RBI’s responsibilities more complex.

With his long experience across different functions, Ray is expected to bring a broad understanding of the banking and financial system to his new role.

He was among five senior RBI officials promoted to the Executive Director level earlier this year. His appointment adds further experience to the RBI’s senior leadership as it continues to focus on financial stability, depositor protection and the smooth functioning of India’s financial system.
