Bengaluru Police Commissioner Launches Eye Care Initiative in Partnership with Nethradhama, Shraddha Eye Care, and Rotary Bangalore Prime

Bengaluru, 8 November 2024: In a significant move to prioritize the well-being of Bengaluru’s police force and their families, Police Commissioner Shri B. Dayananda inaugurated the Bengaluru Police Eye Care Project 2024 at the CAR South Adugodi Parade Ground. The project, created in partnership with Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital, Shraddha Eye Care Trust, and Rotary Bangalore Prime, aims to support eye health within the police community, addressing a critical yet often overlooked need.

This program offers comprehensive eye screenings to Bengaluru Police officers and their families, with a focus on early detection and timely treatment. Leveraging state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, the project ensures officers and their loved ones receive continuous eye health monitoring. For those identified with specific eye conditions, treatment will be available at Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital. Additionally, Shraddha Eye Care Trust will provide free surgical care to those without Arogya Bhagya Yojane Cover, ensuring everyone receives essential care.

Shri B. Dayananda, Bengaluru Police Commissioner, highlighted the unique demands faced by the police force, “Our officers work under difficult, often high-stress conditions to maintain public safety. Ensuring their health, particularly their eye health, is not only beneficial to them but essential for our community. This project reflects our commitment to providing officers and their families with the health support they deserve, which will allow them to serve Bengaluru even more effectively.”

Prof. Dr. Sri Ganesh, Managing Trustee of Shraddha Eye Care Trust and Chairman and Managing Director of Nethradhama Eye Hospital, emphasized the holistic approach of this initiative, “Our police force dedicates their lives to protect us, often at a cost to their own health and their families’ needs. Vision health, in particular, can go overlooked until it becomes critical. We’re honored to support both officers and their families, ensuring they have access to screenings and treatment that prioritize their long-term well-being and quality of life. By including families, we address an often-neglected aspect of police welfare, recognizing that the health of our officers and their loved ones are closely intertwined.”

Dr. Savitha Arun, Director and Medical Superintendent of Nethradhama Super speciality Eye Hospital was also present at the event.

CA Rtn Harish VS, President of Rotary Bangalore Prime, expressed Rotary’s commitment to community support, “This initiative reflects Rotary’s mission to serve those who serve us. By focusing on preventive care, we are helping our police officers stay healthy and prepared for the demands of their roles. Extending this care to their families also reinforces our belief that strong communities start with healthy, supported individuals.”

As a pilot, the success of this project will serve as a model for expanding similar programs across other CAR camps in Bengaluru. Future plans include extending this initiative to other public service officers, ensuring that all personnel have timely access to eye care, ultimately enhancing both their health and operational efficiency in service to the community.

Medica Superspecialty Hospital Recognizes NGOs’ Contribution to Making Cancer Care Accessible on National Cancer Awareness Day

Mumbai/Kolkata, 8th November’24: In commemoration of National Cancer Awareness Day, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, a leading healthcare provider in Kolkata, hosted an interesting panel discussion – ‘Focusing on the important role of NGOs in making modern cancer treatment more accessible to economically disadvantaged patients in private healthcare facilities’. Representatives of reputable NGOs such as Rotary, Fight Cancer, Cancer Fight Foundation, Jadavpur Pension Association, Gauri Bari Welfare, Cankids and Dinante joined the discussion as panelists, moderated by Prof. (Dr.) Subir Ganguly, Senior Consultant and Advisor in Radiation Oncology. A few of the cancer survivors were also present during the discussion.

This year’s National Cancer Awareness Day theme, “Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment,” emphasizes the need for vigilance to recognize early signs and accessible care. Financial barriers often prevent many people from seeking cancer treatment. And NGOs play a key role in bridging this gap. In cooperation with private hospitals These organizations help patients get the treatment they need. They usually support or subsidize medical expenses.

During the discussion, Prof. (Dr.) Subir Ganguly, remarked, “Many lives are lost to cancer, and sadly, some of these losses are due to limited access to treatment. For many, the high cost of cancer care makes it unaffordable, leaving critical treatments out of reach. Here, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have an important role to play in making cancer treatment more accessible and affordable for people from lower economic backgrounds. These organizations fill health care gaps by providing essential services such as financial assistance. In collaboration with private hospitals, they provide inexpensive treatment options and necessary services, like free screenings to patients. NGOs often run awareness campaigns to prevent cancer and are additionally involved in providing emotional and logistical support, such as counseling, Nutrition advice and transportation assistance to cancer patients. At Medica, we also work with many NGOs to make cancer care affordable for the patients in need and we are quite successful in associating with the NGOs which benefited the patients. In the near future, we look to collaborate with more such organizations to help our patients.”

Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Hospitals (East), shared, “Cancer is the biggest threat to our society and being healthcare professionals, our top priority is to make cancer treatment affordable and accessible for patients in need. It is heartbreaking to see people losing their lives due to lack of treatment. From the very beginning, we have partnered with various non-governmental organizations to support patients from lower economical background. Through these collaborations, we have been able to ease some of their financial burden, and we will continue to support our patients in this way at our hospitals.”

How to take care of your diamonds during the monsoon

How to take care of your diamonds during the monsoon

The monsoon season is a heartwarming, romantic time filled with nostalgia that brings with it a breath of fresh air after the intense summer heat. Not everyone loves the monsoons, especially your jewellery. Added moisture and humidity so characteristic of this season hamper the sparkle of your gems. Scintillating diamonds can lose their sheen and beauty during the rains and need that extra dose of tender loving care to ensure they sparkle.

De Beers Forevermark diamonds shares five simple ways you can protect your diamonds the monsoon season:

  1. Say no to moisture – Excessive humidity-induced moisture during these months is one of the main causes that can hamper your diamond jewelry. Regular cleaning can keep their shine and sparkle alive. Impurities in the rainwater can leave harmful sediments on your diamonds making them dull. Cleaning them gently with a simple selvet cloth or washing them with regular soap and watercan preserve their luster. Once washed, lay them on a soft towel to air dry.
  2. Know when best to put on your diamonds – We often ignore the fact that the chemicals in our perfumes, makeup, setting spray, etc., can adversely affect the beauty of natural diamonds, making them lose their sheen. Ensuring you wear your diamonds at the end of your dressing routine will preserve their shine. Apply your makeup, do your hair, spray your perfume & lastly adorn your sparkling diamonds.
  3. Store them properly – The easiest way to ensure that your diamonds do not get scratched or lose their newness is to store them in separate pouches rather than bundling them all up in one box. Use a hard-case box with soft lining to avoid any breakage or scratches. Better still, put them in separate zip pouches orwrapping them individually in soft muslin cloth can also prevent scratches to the jewellery.
  4. Keep your diamond sparkling- Every De Beers Forevermark diamond is distinct and unique. Like snowflakes, no two diamonds are alike which is why these precious gifts of nature need to be looked after regularly. Once a week, soak your diamond jewelry in water with a few drops of mild soap for a few minutes. Use a toothbrush or any other small brush to clean off any dirt nestled in the undersides and grooves.
  5. Handling diamond jewelry – Goes without saying that these rare, precious gems must always be handled with care. Avoid touching the diamonds in your jewelry directly with your fingers so you don’t leave a smudge on their sparkle. When you take off your diamond ring, always keep it rock side up to make sure the rock doesn’t get loose.

These little techniques can ensure your diamonds sparkle forever.

Post cataract surgery recovery time and care

Post cataract surgery recovery time and care

Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev, Chairman and Managing Director, Centre for Sight Group of eye Hospitals

One of the most prevalent vision issues is cataracts. Cataracts, also known as ‘Motiyabind’ in Hindi, are a condition in which the natural lens of the eyes becomes clouded. If not treated promptly, the clouding becomes opaque and causes vision problems. However, if you’ve had cataract eye surgery and are concerned about your visual recovery, don’t be. Even in difficult situations, cataract eye surgery has a high success rate, and procedures are quick and straightforward to recover from. Always follow your eye surgeon’s instructions to adjust to regular life after cataract eye surgery as smoothly as possible.

How long does it take for eyes to settle after cataract eye surgery?

As long as your health is solid and you don’t have any other serious eye problems, your cataract eye surgery recovery should be quick and painless. Statistics also reveal that your chances of a successful surgery and improved vision are huge. The uncomplicated cataract eye surgery procedure usually takes approximately 10-15 minutes. However, you will need to rest in a recovery area until you are no longer sleepy from the sedative or anesthetic. This often takes 30 minutes to an hour.

Why is my vision still blurry after cataract eye surgery?

It is normal to experience blurry vision just after cataract eye surgery. The day after surgery, many patients resume their normal activities. Except for driving, this is true for the majority of activities. Driving is not permitted until your cataract surgeon has approved. Patients will see in the early stages of recovery, although not in clear vision, but instead in soft vision. Many cataract patients notice a significant improvement in their eyesight within 48 hours. It will probably take one to two weeks to adjust and stabilize your vision. The eye should adapt to the new intraocular lens, which has taken the place of the previous lens.

(Post-Op Care): Dos and Don’ts

While everyone is different, the general experience for the weeks following cataract eye surgery entails progressive eye healing. For a few months after surgery, you’ll notice changes in your eyesight.

  • Make sure you don’t get soap in your eyes. Avoid moisturizers, lotions, and make-up around the operated eye.
  • For one week after your cataract eye surgery, do not swim, lift weights, or participate in visually demanding sports such as tennis or racquetball. These can damage your eyes inadvertently.
  • You are free to go out but stay away from congested and dusty areas to avoid difficulties during your post-surgery rehabilitation.
  • Sunglasses can help keep your eyes comfortable and less sensitive to light when you’re outside.
  • Do not go swimming, hot tubbing, or visiting a sauna or spa. This is because following cataract eye surgery, you’ll have a slight wound in your eye that needs to be kept clean.
