Purabi Dairy Felicitates Assam’s Gopal Ratna Awardees

Felicitation ceremony of National Gopal Ratna Awardees at Purabi Dairy premises

Guwahati;December 2, 2024: Northeast India’s largest dairy cooperative, Purabi Dairy, hosted a felicitation ceremony at its premises on Saturday to honor four recipients of the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards. The event recognized their dedication, hard work, and unwavering commitment to advancing the dairy sector in the region. The four awardees are affiliated with Purabi Dairy, which continues to support and empower dairy farmers across Assam through its extensive network and initiatives.

Two farmers from Assam, an AI technician and a dairy cooperative were awarded the National Gopal Ratna Awards (NGRA), one of the highest national awards in the field of livestock and dairy sector. The awards were handed over by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the presence of Prof. SP Singh Baghel and George Kurian, Minister of State, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, at a function in New Delhi as part of the National Milk Day celebrations on November 26.

Dairy farmers Juna Tamuli Barman of Bajali and Junuma Mali of Morigaon won the Best Dairy farmer rearing indigenous cattle/buffalo breeds under the Special NER category. Md Abdur Rahim of Kamrup won Best Artificial Insemination Technician (AIT) award under the Special NER category. Kamdhenu Dugdha Utpadak Samabay Samitee Ltd of Nityananda, Bajali, won the Best Dairy Cooperative Society award under the Special NER category. The milk producers and the dairy cooperative societies are all affiliated to West Assam Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL).WAMUL setup as part of Operation Flood programme of NDDB by Dr. Verghese Kurien, is now on its way to glory. It is most appropriate that on his birthday, the cooperative model’s success is being celebrated, and the best award-winning stakeholders happen to be stakeholders in WAMUL – a cooperative better known by its brand ‘Purabi’.

A few months ago, Junuma Mali’s inspiring journey was featured in Purabi Dairy’s video documentary series, an initiative by WAMUL that celebrates the success stories of dairy farmers who exemplify dedication and resilience in transforming the dairy sector in Assam.

Speaking about the success of the recipients, SK Parida, Managing Director of WAMUL, said, “These awards are a testament to the unwavering dedication and hard work of our dairy farmers and technicians. WAMUL team which includes the Milk Procurement Officers (MPO), 15 nos of Veterinary Executives (VE), Feed and Fodder experts and a strong team of more than 380 nos of Mobile AI Technicians (MAIT) have been constantly supporting the farmers and the cooperatives. At WAMUL, we remain committed to nurturing such excellence and innovation in the dairy sector. I encourage more farmers and cooperatives to join hands with us, so together we can build a resilient and thriving dairy ecosystem in Assam.”

Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, had initiated the ‘Rashtriya Gokul Mission’, under National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development.

All the 4 Awards consists of a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh each, which is a Special Award for North Eastern Region, along with a Certificate of merit and a memento. The winners were selected out of a total of 2,574 applications received.

Purabi Dairy achieves 28% growth, Rs 262 crore turnover in FY 23-24

Guwahati, April 24, 2024: West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), popularly known as Purabi Dairy, achieved a significant milestone in empowering Assam’s rural economy. The dairy cooperative recorded a remarkable 28% growth in the last financial year, with a turnover exceeding Rs 262 crore.

Purabi Dairy witnessed a surge in standardized milk sales by over 20%, resulting in a turnover exceeding Rs 200 crore in liquid milk sales for the first time. This solidifies its position as Northeast India’s largest dairy cooperative. Milk product sales also soared by 35%, with significant increases across categories like curd (47%), ghee (38%), paneer (36%), and lassi (16%).

Speaking about the achievement, Mr. Satya Brata Bose, Managing Director at WAMUL, commented: “We are thrilled to announce this exceptional growth, which underscores our unwavering commitment to supporting dairy farmers and promoting sustainable practices in Assam. Expanding its footprint beyond its traditional markets, Purabi Dairy extended its reach from Tinsukia district to Dhubri in Western Assam. Additionally, the dairy’s products are now available in the North Bank of Assam – in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts, marking a significant geographical expansion.

The unwavering support of the Indian Army has contributed to Purabi Dairy’s growth. It has been witnessed that the demand for fresh milk from the cooperative sector is on the rise over the years among our defence forces.

In line with its commitment to innovation, the dairy cooperative introduced Purabi Mango Lassi and Purabi Ice Cream, catering to evolving consumer preferences for refreshing summer treats. The newly inaugurated dairy plant at Panjabari will play a pivotal role in achieving this goal, along with the introduction of newer product categories such as sweets and flavored milk.

Looking ahead, Purabi Dairy has set an ambitious target of surpassing Rs 350 crore in turnover for FY 2024-25. Furthermore, Purabi Dairy remains steadfast in its support for farmers, with initiatives aimed at enhancing their livelihoods and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. With the revival of East Assam Milk Union Ltd. (EAMUL) under the ‘Purabi’ umbrella, milk procurement network of Purabi now stands expanded into upper Assam. Total milk procurement has now crossed 80,000 litres per day through more than 900 Dairy Cooperative Societies.

Purabi Dairy remains dedicated to supporting dairy farmers across Assam, contributing to sustainable and ethical practices in the industry. As the cooperative continues to grow, its impact on farmers’ livelihoods and the overall development of the dairy sector in the state is expected to increase.
