disabled people

India can create a $11.4 billion market for Disabilities, Accessibility & Inclusion by 2030 impacting 98 million People with Disabilities & the Elderly, reveals report

Although the governments have increasingly made all-around efforts to improve the lives and lifestyles of people with special needs or persons with disability (PWD) in recent years, as also the elderly, there is a lot that still remains to be done. Underlining the need for enormous investment and participation by the private sector, impact leadership champion and advocate Aspire Circle has come out with an insightful report advancing ten landmark ideas that can galvanise investment targeted at this segment and improve the lot of the PWDs in the country.

Titled “Investing for Impact: Disabilities, Accessibility & Inclusion”, the ten investment themes advanced in the report are as follows: Inclusive Hospitality, Travel & Tourism; Inclusive Financial Services; Accessible Mobility; Accessible Infrastructure; Equipment Manufacturing; Assisted Living; Digital Accessibility; Skill Development; Inclusive Education; and, Inclusive Online Marketplaces. The report has been put together by a team comprising some of the leading social entrepreneurs, impact investors, disability experts and academics.

This is the fourth in a series of reports produced by Aspire Circle, as part of a larger and overarching “Impact Future Project” to generate 100 Impact Ideas for India’s Inclusive Growth through India’s largest collaborative research initiative, involving over 200 experts, with the goal of shaping India’s Impact Economy.

“The return on disability movement is proving that it is not just moral, but attractive to serve people with disabilities and the elderly. Our top ten ideas will double annual DNI investments by 2030; taking the total market size to $11.4 billion, impacting 98 million Indians and creating 0.9 million jobs. The movement discards the notion that PWDs are a burden; asking society to save the pity party as evidence proves they are loyal employees and profitable customers.” said Mr. Amit Bhatia, Founder of Aspire Circle & Creator – Impact Future Project.

“At over 1 billion people, Persons with Disabilities are the single largest minority in the world (15% of world’s population). Yet there is no group as large as this which remains underserved and excluded from access to products, services and participation at large. This is largely due to inadequate understanding of important factors i.e. needs, market opportunity and Impact. IFP has rightfully identified the scale of opportunity in targeting this large underserved customer set and I am sure this effort will spur entrepreneurs and investors to look at this segment with a different lens.” said Shashaank Awasthi, Co-Founder V-shesh

India’s Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, Divyangjan Swavalamban Yojana and Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Schemes are some leading government initiatives. There is a need to elevate the Accessible India campaign to the same levels as Swachh Bharat Yojana and others.

arthritis

A Sharp Rise in Arthritis Cases have been observed During Winter: informs Doctor

Winter weather can be especially harsh on those who suffer from arthritis. The bone-chilling cold during winter can flare up arthritis leading to pain, swelling, inflammation, and stiffness of the joints. Thus, a majority of patients will feel uncomfortable as arthritis impacts their quality of life. Keep those achy joints warm by dressing appropriately, opt for physical activity to enhance strength and flexibility, boost energy and ease the pain. Get enough vitamin D as being deficient in it can lead to joint pain. Skip sugary foods that cause inflammation in the body.

Just like other allergies and infections, even arthritis can flare up during winter. Arthritis means the inflammation of the joints. “Winter can lead to a surge in cases arthritis. A significant fall in the barometric pressure, which often occurs as cold approaches, causing joints to expand and become painful. Low temps may also increase the thickness of the synovial fluid that acts as the joint’s shock absorber, making joints stiffer and sensitive to pain. So, when pressure lowers, tissues swell, building tension between joints, and causing pain.

Dr. Vishwajeet Chavan, Orthopedic Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Pune Said, “About 70 patients with arthritis visit the outpatient department every month. However, since the onset of the cold, the number of patients has increased, and now 85 to 90 patients are complaining of joint pain in the age group of 55 to 80. Women are more prone to joint pain in winter than men. Hence, joint pain is 5% higher in women than in men. Hot water compression can be opted for to stay warm during the colder days and manage arthritis.

Cover your hands, knees, legs, and all arthritis-prone areas by dressing in layers. Stay hydrated as dehydration can make you more sensitive to pain. Don’t forget to exercise indoors to improve the symptoms like joint stiffness and muscle weakness, and also take warm showers. Eat omega-3 fatty acids to lower inflammation in the joints. Add avocado, flaxseeds, walnuts, and fish to the diet. Stress triggers arthritis pain, do yoga and meditation. Low levels of vitamin D might lead to arthritis pain. Take vitamin D supplement after consulting the doctor. Avoid heavily processed, sugary and fried foods, alcohol, and colas that trigger joint pain.”

Dr. Ashish Suryavanshi, Orthopedic, Lokmanya Hospital Pune Said, I am seeing 5-6 patients on daily basis with complaints of arthritis. Rise in 25% cases compared to last year. The woman above 50 years are largely seen compared to man.”

There are more muscle spasms in colder temperatures leading to joint pain. The cold climate reduces the blood circulation to the fingers and toes, which also causes arthritis pain. Less sunlight during winters can lead to lower vitamin D levels and weakened joints. Thus, many rheumatoid arthritis patients find it harder to control symptoms during chilly days.” added Dr Suryavanshi

The Mainstreet Marketplace

From collaborations to drops, the most wanted and seriously limited items in fashion are sold out in a matter of seconds. The hype has become the new exclusive, and The Mainstreet Marketplace is India’s premium resale store presenting a well-curated collection of sneakers and apparel. The brand is recognized as an evolving and contemporary space that trades in high-end sneakers and streetwear through its website, store and social media.

“Sneaker collecting majorly involves the trade of limited edition big-ticket items in an after-market. These articles are bought and sold like stocks and exponentially rise in value over time. MNST is a platform aiming to grow sneaker culture in India’’, explains Vedant, who discovered sneaker culture in 2016, and has continued to deep dive into the system, and build an empire of sneakerheads who believe in not just acquiring exclusive deals but also fostering a feeling of individuality and self-expression.

“Our vision is to build on this opportunity and flourish the sneaker and streetwear market in India. Most times, the sneakers we sell are available only exclusively around the world, and it’s our mission to bring them here.” India’s sneaker market has been growing rapidly with Bollywood celebrities lending their heavy influence.

For Vedant, the gap in the industry ignited the need to build a platform with a unique brand aesthetic and culture. “The lack of access to product owing to import restrictions, lack of a local platform regulating the industry, and no real, authentic information are some of the reasons we started Mainstreet. The vision is to grow it into the flagship platform in India.”

Thus, every transaction at Mainstreet follows a meticulous process. A buyer can approach the brand through their website, Instagram or Whatsapp, and is assigned a designated customer service executive. Every item sourced or sold goes through a 23-step internal authentication procedure. Their products are either ready to ship or available within a massive network of over 500 sellers from around the country, which is all listed on the brand’s website.

For the growing subculture and for individuals who believe that lacing up a pair of cool sneaks is more than just putting on a pair of shoes, Mainstreet promises authentic, well-produced content and useful information across the board. The brand hosts giveaways under their subscription service titled The Mainstreet Metro, offering the most-hyped sneakers at competitive prices, motivating customers to enter these games and creating a buzz around the culture.

For Vedant and the team behind Mainstreet, the hype isn’t always a true representation of the people within the scene, and sneaker culture doesn’t have to be overwhelming or intimidating. Their content platform titled Mainstreet TV is a reflection that anyone can be a part of hype culture with the right amount of knowledge, openness, and enthusiasm.

MainstreetTV launched as a YouTube channel on 4th December 2017. With the help of YouTube videos and vlogs that Vedant created initially, Mainstreet encourages users to buy into the sneaker subculture. Still in its nascent stages but growing at an exponential rate, The Mainstreet Marketplace comprises a store in Mumbai and is set to launch a Delhi outlet in the near future.
